Update: Added information about alpha test registrations.

We haven't heard much from Fortnite in quite a while, but Epic is apparently ready to take the wraps off the world-building combat hybrid. A video shows off the game in action for the first time.

The trailer is promoting the latest issue of Game Informer, which features Fortnite as its cover story. The first look lets us see some of the building and combat mechanics in action, along with Epic employees attempting to shed the hard-edged Gears of War image they became known for in the last generation.

Meanwhile, Epic has opened a survey (via IGN) to gather information for potential alpha testers. The questions cover topics like free-to-play games, microtransactions, and Twitch streaming.

Hmmm well lets hope to the gaming gods they make a new Gears for the XB1(pretty sure they are) and the PC and some other games that are more meaty.

I know what you mean still I think this game is going to be very good, I love gears this has a tone of carnage in it it actually looks very close to Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare graphically which is not a bad thing.

We will see how Fortnite has turned out I have not written it off just yet, would I love a new pimped out Gears of the XB1 or PC for sure but this looks like it could be cool.

          Time will tell man.

Eh what ever I just want them to make more EPIC games with UE4 like a lot more.

There's a bunch of half life 2 mods that did this years and years ago. They were fun.

I'm really hoping this has team vs. team vs. hordes. I would buy it on day one if it had that (and didn't suck).

That would be cool. Fight against the other team during the day for supplies or sabotaging their fort. Defend against the horde during the night. Longest one to survive wins.

I am hoping it has some elements of Rust.

Making it 3PP was a bad idea.

Probably work better for VR support though.

If you are constructing part of the fort at your feet, third person gives you more information behind the character. It also shows off their strengths, the quality of humanoid skin and character design, by putting your character on the screen always.

        Third person is cool.

Agreed. I know it's petty of me to write off most games that are third-person, but I usually can't aim straight from third-person. I don't mind it if aim isn't a primary goal of the game, but if it's a shooter, I want the perspective in first-person.

For me, it just brings me out of the game. Also, movement/controls become terrible. It's wholly inferior to 1PP unless your game is built upon precise hand-to-hand/mêlée combat.

Yeah. This has very little info about the game proper. All I hear is "it's not Gears of War".

The spin-meter went up to "presidential election". I counted 8 plugs along the lines of "the new face of Epic," or "we're not stuck in a box," or "We didn't want to do year after year of Gears." It's also suspicious that Epic has literally shut down the PR machine on Fortnite since mid-2012, only to wake it up for what is apparently a stump speech to quell all those who were asking if Epic's studio was relevant anymore (present company included).

It's still in a set of genres that I really don't like (tower defense, structure-building, third-person), during a time when I'm waiting for the next PC FPS game that isn't trapped in Origin or UPlay, or diluted by the conventions that have turned most multiplatform FPSes into rollercoaster railshooters rife with QTEs and Skinner Box multiplayer.

I think it was their way of saying "this isn't Gears of War (but hey, pssst, we're the Gears of Wars guys, brah)"
