How Rocksteady pushed for Arkham Knight to be series' final chapter

Batman: Arkham Knight will be the canonical end to the Arkham series, but it took some effort from Rocksteady to make it that way.

Having played through both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, it became fairly clear that Rocksteady was building towards a climactic ending for its Bat-series. Even with critical praise and high sales, Rocksteady's vision hasn't changed, which is why the studio is ready to step away from the Bat for good with Batman: Arkham Knight.

"Anything we do is a collective decision between Rocksteady, Warner Brothers, and DC Comics," Rocksteady's Dax Ginn explained to IGN. "But it was something that we were really pushing for because we had a really clear vision for how this story should end, and the way we wanted it to end."

Ginn adds that the series is ending just as Rocksteady always envisioned it: with a playable Batmobile.

"For us I think the Batmobile is that final thing," Ginn added. "It's such a critical part of the game, the epicenter of the design, but once we've done this, I don't know we're ever going to feel like we've missed out on a critical piece of what it feels like to be the Batman. That was kind of our driving force all along."

Rocksteady is uncertain of their own future, not releasing any details on life after Batman. Of course, it's safe to say that even after the studio walks away, Warner Bros. will likely move forward with the Arkham series in some fashion, having already ventured into prequel territory with WB Games Montreal.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Good. I like things that end while they are still awesome.

When that rumor popped up I nearly shat bricks!!! I wish they would do it with drop-in/out multiplayer, multiple skins for use. Heck make the customizable as well!!! Just imagine freeflow combat with the turtles!!!!

They've built a good enough name now that they should be able to do an Original IP and get funding for it... if not, screw the game industry.

They kinda implied they might drop hints about where they're going next in AK, so maybe Justice League?

But is that going to be Rocksteady or is it going to be WB Games Montreal?

To start out JL? I'd think Rocksteady for sure

I expect WBGM to make another Arkham game using the AK engine

But...it will never truly be complete until we can fly The Bat (The Bat-Jet). And what about the Bat-Boat and the Bat-Bike?!? ;-)
