Unreal Engine isn't the only tool offering indie devs cheap monthly access. Following this morning's announcement, Crytek has also revealed that it will be offering a monthly subscription option for their CryEngine.

Beginning in May, indie developers will be able to access the full version of CryEngine for a monthly subscription fee of $9.90 per user. According to Crytek, it will be "royalty free," making it significantly cheaper than Epic's offering.

"We are really excited to make CryEngine available to hundreds of thousands of developers working with Crytek to make awesome games,” Crytek's Carl Jones said in the announcement.

CryEngine's free SDK will continue to be available for non-commercial development. However, developers wanting to take advantage of the newest features of CryEngine will need to subscribe. For a look at what the free SDK offers now, check out this new video from GDC:

Did everyone hear rumblings from each other about this? Behind closed door deals? How'd they all end up doing this at the same time?

Just the market probably. Unity is really removing the need for the old game-turned-licensed engine model. Even Valve uses Unity for their VR experiments.

So Crytek and Epic are slashing prices.

They are all competing with Unity and watching that money roll in.

Also Autodesk has started doing this, so this is how it's done now.

Unreal engine is still the more mature, feature-rich, and community supported engine from what I understand

Andrew, can you get clarification about whether the subscription service includes any source access? Epic's announcement is extremely compelling as they are offering full source access (minus platform specific code for Xbox One and PS4) . Unity has never (or at least not for the past couple of years) provided source access except in very specific, negotiated circumstances.

A major problem with this type of engine is that you need very highly detailed assets which are expensive to create.

Not a limitation of the engine per se. I'm sure you can import crappy assets into CE too if you wish.

not saying people who prefer it are wrong. people have different tastes. but mine say MWO didn't really do enough to deserve to come in where LL had created something awesome and completely eclipse it attention wise. I don't think it was as good

but I will cop to really hating persistent unlocks, to take it with that grain of salt

Far Cry 3 is a customized fork of CryEngine.

no offense, but you're fucking retarded.

MechWarrior Online, MechWarrior Living Legends, Far Cry, Star Citizen [unreleased but if you think it's gonna suck you're smoking even more crack than I thought], Crysis 1 thru 3, and Ryse: Son of Rome

        Sit the fuck DOWN.
