It's taken quite a long time, but EA and Maxis' SimCity reboot finally finally has an official offline mode.

"We've listened to our players and today we are delivering against their most direct feedback with the release of the new Single-Player Mode,” Maxis' Patrick Buechner said. According to Maxis, the offline mode now requires calculations to be done locally on a player's computer. "gains in optimization to the GlassBox Engine" enabled this to be possible.

The original online mode will be called "Multiplayer Mode," which will offer leaderboards, achievements, dynamic pricing of resources, and cloud saves--features not available in the offline mode. However, Single-Player will let players control when and how their progress is saved.

Here's a look at how to play the new offline mode:

If they just would have made it right the first time. I was so stoked for a new Sim City when I heard it was coming but then the thing we got I didn't even bother to buy.

That, and the fact that you have to partner up with your friends in order to mine resources to keep your city running. I don't remember SimCity 2000 being an RTS game; it was a SIMULATION.

This and Command & Conquer 4 were the "always-on PC game experiment" games at EA, and both of them failed badly enough to tarnish the reputation of their respective franchises. The game that was originally unveiled as Command & Conquer: Generals 2, got transformed into a free-to-play game, got CANNED, with the closure of the studio working on it... and then EA went and said, "Your early access to the beta will be honoured once production of this title resumes under a new studio." (No, seriously, that's what EA said. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-19-command-and-conquer-will-be-resurrected-after-its-untimely-cancelation )

As far as Maxis goes, Ocean Quigley and Stone Librande left, and who knows if they'll ever make another SimCity game ever again (seriously, they'll have to RE-reboot that franchise). Oh, and The Sims 4 will be built as a single-player, offline experience: http://www.shacknews.com/article/80325/simcity-problems-led-to-offline-sims-4

        Exactly.
They pumped DLC out the wazoo but didn't give you the space to use any of it!
Is it sad that Sim City 2000 is STILL the better game?
        I think yes.

so this is where the phrase about cutting off your own nose to spite your face comes from.

You have to admire how consistent the PR spin has been up to this point. Even their parting shot of "gains in optimization to the GlassBox Engine" which completely flies in the face of, well... reality.
