Diablo 3 auction house closure detailed

In an effort to prepare Diablo 3 players for the closure of the auction on March 18, Blizzard has updated its FAQ to answer some lingering questions.

Now that Diablo 3 has updated to its new Loot 2.0 system, it's time for the game's auction house to bid farewell. In an effort to make the transition easier, Blizzard has updated its FAQ to help prepare players for the auction house's March 18 closure date by answering some last-minute inquiries.

All gold and real-money auctions will cease at 3AM PDT on March 18, around the game's normal maintenance window. However, Blizzard states on Battle.net that the time is subject to change. Items placed for auction at that time will either go to the highest bidder or be returned to their current owners.

Players will still have ample opportunity to claim anything still in the auction house's 'Completed' tab. The auction house window will remain available until June 24, at which point any unclaimed funds or items are lost forever.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I get how the loot system needed an overhaul, but I'm surprised Blizz is doing this from a business perspective. They did the paid auction house as a means to curb the bot farmers - basically an additional revenue stream. I guess this means the experiment didn't work?

      No, I don't play D3.

Well, bot farmers get a bit locked out by having all these Account Bound items now.

The only way to allow trading without 3rd party gold farming is an auction house.

They're just saying that the trade window will still exist. It exists now, but you can only trade non-bound items, or stuff that has dropped with that person in-game, in the last 2 hours of playtime.

Re: "still be able to trade with one another", that's exactly how it works now. You can trade rare items with anyone. Legendaries and sets are still BoA (or tradeable for up to 2 hours with people in your party when it dropped).

Unenchanted magical and rates are not bound. These can be traded.

It's amazing how they couldn't figure out a middle ground between the current implementation and completely shutting it down.

They went into it intent on fighting equipment selling sites. If you can think of a way to allow people to trade items without selling them online you should let them know.

Who F&*%ing cares for what is basically a finite ( I know they added the adventure mode ) game that ends and doesn't cost a subscription and is basically singleplayer and co-op. Borderlands is not a mess without all these post launch controlling methods.

The idea should have never left the bathroom stall where it was thought up after a bad night of taco bell.

It's generally not a good idea to become what you are trying to stop. It legitimizes the actions and in this case significantly underhanded the game play.

I'm kind of in the boat that heavily gear based games should use an item barter system AH and completely remove gold from the picture. The players will create their own economy that works within the game. 3rd party sites will still exist, but they are impossible to battle.

Except that Blizzard did battle them and won. Except that it winning they realized it wasn't worth it.
