Zelda games have become too 'linear,' producer says

A Link Between Worlds may have been a sequel to a classic Zelda game, but it did a lot to change up long-held conventions in the series. In a new interview, series producer Eiji Aonuma hints that the Zelda series will continue to shake things up by going against "traditional" approaches.

"The recent Zelda games have been rather linear as I thought players didn't like getting lost, wondering what to do, or where to go," he said.

"However, I've come to question this 'traditional' approach as I felt that we couldn't gain the sense of wonder that existed in the original Legend of Zelda, in which you made unexpected encounters and where what used to be impossible would suddenly become possible," he told Official Nintendo Magazine.

His team is currently working on a new Zelda game for Wii U. While details have been scant, it's refreshing to hear that Nintendo is ready for experimentation. "We will, of course, continue to question and reconsider the approaches we have taken in the past without any reservations."

This reminds me of how very very much I would love an Elder scrolls style open world Zelda game

That would either be really terrible or not really a Zelda game. It would be more like an Elder Scrolls game with a more cartoony aesthetic.

This will run into the balance issue of exploration vs open world and his not wanting players to get lost. But, I say that with the thought that the target audience of Zelda is much younger than most open world games.

I didn't like getting lost, wondering what to do or where to go when I was a kid either but I fucking dealt with it because I wasn't a little pussy.

I thought people were saying the latest one on the 3DS was more open and non-linear than even the game it was based on? And people seemed to like it. Was it still linear in the end?

Zelda for Wii U is the number one game I'm looking forward to seeing at E3. Only Half-Life 3 could challenge it.

Didn't Nintendo say they were skipping the conferences in favor of their small mini announcement events? Not sure.

I don't know if they're going back to doing a keynote or not but either way they've said we're going to see the new Zelda at E3. That's all that matters to me.
