From Software (via Kotaku) has posted a website counting the number of player deaths across both console versions of Dark Souls 2, as well as the cause of their demise. As of this writing, nearly 3 million PS3 players have met their end, while 1.3 million Xbox 360 players have fallen.

The site includes more information, besides how many warriors have died. It also features other stats, like how many people have cleared the game, what items players are using, and how many souls have been lost. It also includes information on updates, maintenance, and whether the servers are experiencing any outages.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

But it's the proportions between numbers, 2,991,976 deaths and only 3 beat the game in ps3 and in xbox 1,311,973 deaths and 1,657 completed the game....

And... imnova, i dont know wich was released earlier, but if they played it earlier, both deaths and times beaten the game will be higher than the other version, not only one of them.

So beeing released a couple of hours before doesn't make any difference.

yes but ease of pirating will make a difference

or... the servers weren't up until a week after the game had been pirated on the 360, and then when the servers did go up they updated with all the people who had beaten it. the deaths during that time were not counted because the servers were not up to collect the data?

                Oh didn't know that.

Still the difference is pretty big, x4 more souls lost and more than 2x more deaths.

Pretty big if the deaths and souls lost started counting with only a couple of hours between releases.
That if its like you say and only game completion was detected by the servers from that pirated week.

The difference is huge any way you look at it xD.

input lag is why the game has been beating over 550 times more on one system versus the other?

all of this is conjecture, but I maybe the game over count is based on people who have generated a certain achievement versus the kill count being updated on the fly?

there is a plaque you can view in game to see a real time update of the global kill count, so I assume that wasn't working prior to the game's actual release..

and now we are back to the original point that there are more copies on PS3 thus more deaths in the same window of time

ok I'll try one more time :

                          re: times cleared

However they are counting deaths applied retroactively to people who beat the game on pirated copies over a week before release of the game. Maybe this was done by counting people who have gotten the achievement or something like that. Thus, since the 360 copy was pirated so early, there will be significantly more completions.

                          re: deaths

They did not start counting deaths until the game actually released and servers came online. Thus, since more people have it for PS3, and the servers have been up for the same amount of time on both platforms, there are more deaths on PS3.

I'd phrase your title it differently.

"Dark Souls 2 Players have died over 4 million times in 2 days"

Yours implies there's 4 million unique players.... maybe that's just me?

The current phrasing implies that Dark Souls 2 is like The Ring almost.
