Diablo 3 lead designer calls Adventure Mode 'primary feature' in Reaper of Souls

Diablo 3 lead designer Keven Martens talks about the focus on the new Adventure Mode, and how it corrects some issues with the original release.

The Diablo 3 expansion Reaper of Souls is coming later this month, adding a raised level cap, closing the Auction House, and introducing the already-patched Loot System. It's even adding a new Act, but lead content designer Kevin Martens says the primary feature is its new Adventure Mode.

"I would call Adventure Mode the primary feature of the expansion," he told PC Gamer. "That said, I think Act V is our best act, so we did take everything we learned there. And you do have to kill Malthael once with one character before Adventure Mode is unlocked. But knowing that you don't have to play story mode over and over again allows people to relax and just enjoy Act V for what it is; and they may or may not come back to it after that, but they don't have to. It doesn't feel as onerous to sit through those things."

He also said that the Adventure Mode has let the team add much-need replayability, which he feels was missing from the main game. "You don't just kill Malthael anymore and the game is done. And I think that was a little too much the case, unfortunately, in Diablo III," Martens said. "That's not the case anymore. When you kill Malthael, now you're finally starting Reaper of Souls. As good as Act V is, once you get into Adventure Mode and you see the promise of everything random that Diablo does; that makes replayability the point of the game. It's not linear anymore so you're experience is different everytime you come in."

This sounded interesting until I saw you and to finish the game before you can even experience it.

I'd only have a problem with that had I been in the RoS beta and played all of act 5 already. It's still going to be new content to explore for many people.

Why'd you do that? I stopped playing RoS the moment I found out it was all of Act V minus the final boss fight.

I didn't as I was not in the beta. Suppose I could have worded that better. Don't think it's an issue!

        Opps, that's "had to finish"

Is "finishing the game" even a speed bump in a Diablo game? 95% of everyone's playing time comes after killing the end boss. Heck, you only have to do it once with a single character and then it's unlocked on all the rest of your chars.

I have a co-worker who bought the game on release, played Acts 1-4 on Normal, and has barely logged on since.

It was nice in beta when they'd just let you play Adventure right from the get-go, but then they changed it to require beating the insipid story mode at least once :(

Not only that, it's just one new act. Everyone will beat it in 2 hours or less.

Or less if you turn the difficulty way down and equip as much runspeed as possible (25% + whatever skills you have).

Good point. Turn it to minimum difficulty and most players could death-touch anything in their way.

Completing a game to get access to new modes of play is a concept that's been around for decades. To complain about it is just retarded. Especially if the content is end game. You'll need to level up to experience it in the first place. Otherwise you simply aren't ready.
