There's a sector of Street Fighter 4 fans that haven't been keen on the changes made to their favorite characters over the course of the game's evolution. Those fans were made very happy at tonight's SoCal Regionals event in Irvine, CA. A new trailer debuted, revealing that a new "Edition Select" feature would be included with Ultra Street Fighter 4, which allows players to take their favorite versions of characters from the entire SF4 series and use them in battle.

The character selection screen will prompt players to select their fighter, as well as which version of the game the fighter hails from. This includes Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition v.2012, and the new iterations of the characters from Ultra Street Fighter 4 itself. For example, players can now use the original SF4 version of Sagat, before the character saw several changes made over the course of the series.

"We knew that stepping into this, it would be a very definitive version," Capcom community representative Peter 'Combofiend' Rosas told Shacknews. "It was something a lot of players would probably like. We did see a lot of requests for it."

There is a bit of a trade-off, though. New mechanics, like delayed wake-up and Red Focus will be exclusive to USF4 versions of characters, while older characters will not have access to any mechanics added to editions that succeeded them. So your SF4 Sagat will only have one Ultra at his disposal.

"We wanted to give you the character as they are," Rosas added. "If it's vanilla, you get vanilla. You get everything that entails that: the damage, the one Ultra, the frames. Whereas if you want to play the Ultra version, you get everything that Ultra entails."

Rosas initially stated that matchmaking lobbies would be segregated between those purely utilizing USF4 changes and those that implement Edition Select rules, though EventHubs has since revealed that Edition Select will be an offline-only feature. For more, check out the trailer below.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Neat! I assume they'll use a separate matchmaking pool for that.

Doesn't look like it. They're demoing it right now and it looks like it'll fit tourneys just fine.

Tourneys sure, but if I play online, I'd like to be able to play with USF4 balances only.

Side note: I wonder if they'd be willing to add command inputs to the ultra select UI, a la SF3... lot easier to remember a command than a litany of names.

Pretty much Vanilla Sagat/Ryu/Seth and a few players with AE twins are going to be playing this mode. IF the frame data is preserved, then there is really no reason NOT to play Vanilla versions of several characters.

It does, however, quell a lot of the complaints I heard about some of the Ultra changes. There are a lot of folks that will be sticking with the AE 2012 versions of characters.

New ultra mechanics aren't available, also unblockables are removed from Ultra versions of characters, but still exist for previous versions as well as stuff like Akuma infinite on Sagat. So there may be some reasons to not just go for the old top tier.

I like the mode as a novelty, but hope it doesn't become tourney standard. There's already so many characters to learn matchups and then learning them for different versions (not just frame data but inputs as well as blocking high or low for certain divekicks) seems like a lot.

I was just going to say, vanilla Sagat!!!

VanSagat is basically the f'ing king. Much like his "soft" ban in SSFT, the Vanilla version of him is clearly the best version and he'll be abused as far as f'ing possible.

There are really only a few characters that have gotten better, but most of the shoto crew simply were OP in Vanilla.

Sounds fun, but there's no way it will fly at major tournaments. Also there will have to be a separate Ultra only mode for online ranked

I just spoke to Combofiend. The intention is for major tourneys, but it'll ultimately be up to the tournament organizer.

In fact, the article has been updated with some quotes from Combofiend, who was kind enough to answer some quick questions as the event ended.

Tell Combo he's dreaming if he wants to see this as the main stage on a major. Vanilla Sagat and AE Yun are too good for red focus and double ultra to matter at all. They have enough trouble ahead of them to balance 40 fighters, let alone 2-4 tuning sets for each character

I'd love to see it, but I don't think it will happen.

yea no changes in ultra will help against AE yun who was the most broken character in the whole series by a wide wide margin (even more than vanilla sagat)

It's pretty good they're making it comprehensive, but I'm not sure I care about choosing any of the old character versions or playing others who do so online. Unless the UFS4 additions really suck of course.

This makes more sense. It's "too soon" for edition select to be considered in a tournament without USF4 seeing any play yet.
