Xbox Games with Gold: Civilization Revolution and Dungeon Defenders in March

Xbox 360's "Games with Gold" line-up offers Civilization Revolution and Dungeon Defenders.

Microsoft has revealed its "Games with Gold" freebies for March, which will have you declaring war and fighting off waves of invaders. Coming tomorrow will be Civilization Revolution, followed by Dungeon Defenders starting on March 16.

Both received generally positive reviews. CivRev normally costs $29.99 for a digital copy on Xbox 360, but you can find a disc version for $20 pretty easily. Dungeon Defenders costs $14.99 digitally.

This also means today is your last chance to grab Toy Soldiers: Cold War, the second game offered in the February line-up.

Urgh. So weak compared to PSN+. I mean it's better than a kick to the junk but...

Yea, agreed. I'm not a PSN+ subscriber, but dam do they get much better stuff. I kinda wish MS would have come up with something different instead of this weak attempt at "ooo, me too!". No idea what that would be, but heck something like free xbox music access or something with xbox video. Something.

Agreed that GwG pales compared to PS+, but I will say I loved Civ Rev. I can't go back to it now after graduating to Civ 4/5, but it was a great intro to the game and did a wonderful job of showing how Civ is more of a big tactical board game as opposed to a world builder.

Man, MIcrosoft. Why are you so bad at this compared to Sony?

The way I look at it is this, MS is doing just okay with these offerings. They need to do a lot more considering what Sony is offering with PSN+ but it is good to see them trying.

The biggest problem is that Sony had a lot to lose with the PSN+ program, they needed to justify it to people and make it feel worthwhile so that they could make it required for online with the PS4. I absolutely believe that their plan from the beginning was at some point to make it required for online in some way, and they used the PS4 to pivot that.

With MS though, they made Gold a requirement for online from an early time, even for stupid shit like Netflix, they have set the expectation that they don't owe people anything and so the Games with Gold thing needs to be way better than "just okay" to keep selling Gold as their premiere online service, instead of just a crappy way to nickel and dime people (which I don't believe btw, just something some people believe).

I would argue a bigger motivator at the time was restoring consumer confidence after the PSN hack. They needed something to generate goodwill and which represented such a good value that you'd get over your hang ups of having another CC# on file with Sony. They could've made PSN+ mandatory for multiplayer on PS4 regardless, it's not like console owners would've had some better option to go to.
