King, developer and publisher of Candy Crush Saga, has abandoned its attempt to trademark the word "candy" when pertaining to video games. Since its attempt to own the commonly-used word, the company has come under attack for its attempt to block games from the App Store--notably, The Banner Saga.

In a statement to Kotaku, a spokesperson from the company said that "King has withdrawn its trademark application for Candy in the U.S., which we applied for in February 2013 before we acquired the early rights to Candy Crusher... We feel that having the rights to Candy Crusher is the best option for protecting Candy Crush in the U.S. market."

The company has been on the defense ever since their trademark attempt, with the company's CEO issuing an apology, but remaining steadfast in their efforts. The company is currently exploring an IPO.

How does "Candy" pertain to The Banner Saga? Do you mean the attempt to trademark "Saga"?

Just how large a percentage of Candy Crush Saga's player-base do you think knows about this law-suit? :)
