Microsoft exec pledges free-to-play support coming to Xbox One

In spite of their slow start, Microsoft promises that more free-to-play experiences are coming to their next-gen console.

Microsoft has been curiously slow to embrace free-to-play, with only a few offerings on Xbox 360. Sony, on the other hand, has been much more aggressive, with free-to-play games on both PS3 and PS4. In spite of their slow start, Microsoft promises that more free-to-play experiences are coming to their next-gen console.

"Good success with F2P on 360 will mean things come to Xbox One," Microsoft VP Phil Spencer tweeted (via Gamespot). "We'll announce closer [to] their launches."

Currently, the only free-to-play experiences on Xbox 360 include World of Tanks and Happy Wars.

there was never a shortage of shitty full priced games but no one has latched onto those as a reason the $50-60 price point is gross

I still don't see how that stuff is supposed to work on either the One or the PS4. Lock disc-based multiplayer behind a paywall but microtransaction multiplayer games are in front of the paywall?

        Weird.

$3.99 for 5,000 in game coins! Coins buy in-game card packs. Card packs have in-game equipment... fuck dude... Madden Ultimate Team, FIFA Ultimate team, they've been doing it for years at this point.

So aren't those publishers going to be mad that Planetside or Hearthstone or World of Tanks gets your business whether or not you're a Live/PS+ subscriber while other games can't?

I wonder if they will try to bring MechWarrior Online to Xbox One... as long as they keep it separate from the PC servers, I'm fine with that. It would be interesting to see.

Does Microsoft still own the Mechwarrior IP for games?

Yes I think so, they license it out to PGI to make MWO and they extended it out recently for a few more years.

I think the console perspective of F2P is going to hinge on Titanfall. AFAIK there's very little additional you can spend money on besides the game itself. Does that support the marketing they're going to do for it? Or do we live in a world where you microtransact or die?

anyone playing console games is already familiar with F2P somewhere. It's success rides merely on whether it's a good or bad implementation. EA is already raking in F2P style money with their sports game, so much so that they'll truly be F2P in some fashion soon.

I don't think I understand your post. Are you saying that if TitanFall fails it will be seen as a reason to move everything over to f2p model?

The same as F2P is hinging on Titalfall PC ?
