Gearbox not working on Borderlands 3, in favor of unannounced next-gen IP

Borderlands 2 hinted at larger things, but Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says the scope of such a project is too big for the company to handle right now.

Borderlands 2 ended on a note that implied big things for the franchise's future, but Gearbox has decided to take a step back for the time being. CEO Randy Pitchford said recently that Borderlands 3 isn't in the works yet, instead getting to work on two other original games.

"We are not working on Borderlands 3," Pitchford told Polygon. "That is unqualified. We have more to do in the franchise, but no there isn't a Borderlands 3."

Pitchford says that the studio certainly will be doing more with Borderlands, but says that their vision for the third installment is too big for them to handle right now. "When you think of what Borderlands 3 should be, it should be massive," he said. "It should be bigger and better than Borderlands 2. It should carry forward the story. It's probably crazy multiplatform, depending on timing. It would have to be a next-gen game and a current-gen game, if it was coming at any time in the reasonably near future."

Pitchford noted that they "are doing things in Borderlands" that will be announced soon, but didn't specify what those might be. We know that Borderlands 2 is getting a Vita port this year, and that Gearbox has partnered with Telltale for Tales from the Borderlands, but any other projects in the hopper remain firmly under wraps.

Pitchford also pointed out that right now the studio is working on or somehow involved with Brothers in Arms, the Homeworld remakes, Homeworld: Shipbreakers, and two unannounced, next-gen intellectual properties.

In other words, we are taking on other projects so we can farm them out to other studios in order to fund Borderlands 3.

They deserve some flak for their handling of Colonial Marines.

What's the state on the Duke IP. Are they allowed to make a new game yet? I remember GeorgeB3DR trying to drag them to court.

3D Realms dropped the case after the evidence review cleared up any misunderstandings they had reagarding what they thought were owed. It was probably found that either Gearbox did not make back the money they paid 3DRealms, made so little it was not worth fighting for, or something came up that clearly proved they were in the wrong.

You joke, but I think there's plenty of room in the market for someone to open up with a futuristic space FPS that isn't burdened with MMO and/or RPG mechanics. I don't think Gearbox is going to make such a thing, though; they seem to love RPG mechanics these days.

Half-Life: Opposing Force back in the 90s. And while Borderlands obviously isn't a ground-up FPS, given the RPG mechanics, I think it still shows they have the necessary talent to create one.

Heh. For a game all about exploring your environment to find hidden things there was an awful amount of barriers to it.

If I had to guess, they don't want to waste resources developing for last gen consoles so are waiting for the new crop to mature a bit first. Having to develop for multiple generations of consoles is part of the reason why CoD Ghosts did as poorly as it did.

Creating the story and environment has to be a massive amount of work, probably several years of effort even if they didn't spend time making changes to the engine.

Im playing through BL2 right now and I'm kinda disappointed that its not much of a leap from BL1. It really just feels like the same game with a few new(ish) characters. I think it would be good for them to take a break and come back to the franchise on next gen. Also, can we please get another planet? I'm pretty tired of the creatures on Pandora. You can only kill so many skags before it gets really old.

wait till you see the end of BL2.... your dream of other planets is in the realm of possiblities.

Good on them. Let some time go by and do some other projects then come back to it later. If they went right to BL3 everyone would just be complaining about too many sequels.

I'm definitely fine with that it's better for them to let it to rest a bit. It gives them a chance to work out the kinks of developing for the new consoles.

I never finished the second one. Just dragged on too slowly for me so I just gave up on it. I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't draw me in as much as the first one (which I played through a couple times).

I had a quite similar experience as well. Had an almost embarrassing hours played listed in steam for the 1st one, don't think I got to lvl 30 in the sequal, the characters didn't click with me and some of the content did seem to drag on.
