Little Mac joins Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS

Today's Nintendo Direct kicked off with a new competitor for the new Super Smash Bros.: Little Mac from Punch-Out!

Today's Nintendo Direct kicked off with a new competitor for the new Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS and he's no stranger to one-on-one combat. Little Mac from the Punch-Out series has been promoted from Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl to full-on playable character.

The trailer below shows Little Mac training, as he receives instructions from faithful trainer Doc Louis, who may or may not be eating a chocolate bar as he shouts his words of encouragement. In addition to showing off his fleet feet and boxing prowess, the Punch-Out star will also have a unique power meter that rapidly builds up with successful blows, not unlike his signature series. Building up this meter will lead to KO-caliber punches. Mac is also shown hulking out in what will presumably be his Final Smash attack.

This brings the Super Smash Bros. roster up to 23 and counting.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Pretty awesome. Not entirely unexpected, but still a nice surprise.

I thought he'd be relegated to Assist Trophy-status again. This is a really cool surprise for me.

        Dude, Mega Man.

Is there a single character in all of video games more appropriate for SSB?

My wish is for Nintendo to let them stream Melee and tell the tournament organizers, "But in exchange, we want a half-hour of time to show off the new Smash Bros," like what Double Helix did last year for Killer Instinct. Being full-on antagonistic would be utterly foolish on their part.

Awesome!!! That trailer got me even more hyped for the game :)

Just for that, I'm gonna have to actually finish beating Punch Out for the NES and SNES soon!

Sure. Yeah. Why make an entry in an already neglected franchise when you can do this?

      Harumph.
