Rust's new 'CheatPunch' system banishes over 4,500 cheaters

Rust implemented a new anti-cheat measure over the weekend called CheatPunch and it has already successfully removed 4,621 cheaters.

Now that Rust is a zombie-less world, humans will have to survive based on their own skills and instincts. With that said, there's no room in this world for cheaters and creator Garry Newman is making sure that they don't prosper, thanks to a new anti-cheat system implemented over the weekend called CheatPunch.

Newman states on the Rust blog that the CheatPunch system has successfully banished 4,621 cheaters from the game's official servers. Those running their own servers can add the feature by updating to the latest version of Rust and punching in "-cheatpunch" into their command line. Newman hopes to add some additional anti-cheat measures in the future, including a special site where cheaters can find out exactly where they got caught.

However, Newman acknowledges that CheatPunch won't be a permanent solution. "It’s a stop gap solution," he says. "It's going to get rid of a bunch of cheaters, but it's not hard to get around (by design). We fully expect cheats to be touted as 'CheatPunch proof' quite soon. That's cool. We're never going to be finished fighting."

Rust is currently in alpha and is available now through Steam Early Access.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I chase people around and demand tax money. There are ways to permanently trap people in boxes (and sometimes kill them if you close a door on them while they are jumping) if they don't. It is pretty fun to troll in the game.

Also trying to build a base that can't be raided or blocked in is great fun to (all while trying to break someone elses defenses)

Probably so they can have an open and visible answer to the people that swear that they never cheated/falsely banned. aka the "OMG! I NEVER CHEATED! I SWEAR!" when in fact they did.

Read through Garry's thread on Facepunch to get your answer: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1362475

The tool already exists btw: https://playrust.eu/bancheck.php

And because it exists, it's made for a very entertaining read through of that thread.

meh pc gaming, its a never ending fight and you won't win. I'm starting to think that SteamOS might be the solution. Make the OS closed as f where you can install apps only available on steam. All we need is games, ts/mumble and a browser.

Gabe blasted MS for Windows 8 being a "closed system". It would be mighty hypocritical of him to close off his own creation like that.

I will never understand the mental retardation that a "cheater" needs to justify cheating in a game like this. (or any game for that matter) Glad to see them taking a stance against it. Too many games eventually get ruined because of a cheating community. I also think bans need to be much more encompassing. Found cheating in BF4? Your account is deleted and IP banned and so forth. Part of the reason why cheating exists in some of my hobbies is because the punishments aren't harsh enough.

That spirit has been characterized as "the will to win at all costs, by any means necessary" by other parts of society that have far less integrity and far more greed.

Also, have you already forgotten all the problems PunkBuster had?

In games I don't think it's that at all, I think it's pure juvenile boredom. Playing fair doesn't get their rocks off, they need to add some excitement by doing something taboo.
