World of Warcraft discontinuing 'Scroll of Resurrection' referrals

World of Warcraft will discontinue the Scroll of Resurrection referral program for former subscribers on February 18, so this is your last chance to try and convince a friend to come back and get yourself a rare mount in the process.

The window for former World of Warcraft players to re-subscribe to the game for a special reward is about to close, for good. As of February 18, players will no longer be able to send out a Scroll of Resurrection to former subscribers, effectively closing this particular referral program that began almost two years ago.

Current WoW players that send out a Scroll of Resurrection and successfully bring a former player back into the subscription fold receives either a Spectral Gryphon for the Alliance or a Spectral Wind Rider for the Horde. Players that accept a Scroll of Resurrection receive an auto-boost to level 80 for one character and seven free days of game time. However, given that the upcoming Warlods of Draenor expansion will allow for an insta-boost to level 90 and that Blizzard may also be selling those insta-boosts a la carte, it may not be much of an incentive anymore.

Blizzard explains, "The time has come to bid adieu to the Scroll of Resurrection. It's served its divine purpose, but like most scrolls, it only has so many charges before it loses its magic and crumbles into ethereal dust. For those who'd still like a chance to use the scroll, you have until February 18 before players are no longer able to send invitations. For those who have an invitation outstanding, that’s still good for 30 days from the time it was sent, after which point the invitation will expire and the benefits can no longer be claimed."

But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

They are adding paid "upgrades" to level 90. I'm guessing they see that in direct competition to those dollars. Also the Scrolls never had a "moving" date, meaning that they only worked on chars who hadn't played since a certain date and it never moved forward, I imagine it's a trickle coming through now.

That's odd.. wonder if this is a prelude to "$25 to insta-90!"

I can't make up my mind on this feature.

Have they announced what, if any, restrictions will be tacked on to it?

No, but there were some screenshots from PTR that seemed to indicate using it on an already created character would raise certain tradeskills also. The details are pretty sparse at the moment.

They did release details that using it on a level 60+ will give it "veteran" status which will increase tradeskills and other such things.

Ahh cool, I must have missed that, makes sense I guess. I figured maybe they'd scale the price based on how many levels you wanted or something. Oh wells.

It may be a separate purchase, but it will definitely be a perk for pre-ordering the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion.

There's one included with the expansion once it's released, but you'll get another redeemable now if you pre-order

No, I think you just get one, but get it now/early if you digital pre-order.

Talk about some greedy mother fuckers. I mean FFS its still 25 to change realms, i may be wrong but this is probably all automated now.

It was always automated. Transfer costs are there to stop pleasure-seeking guilds bouncing and hopping around the game at a whim.

Also to make money hats. Charging that much PER CHARACTER is a joke.

Yeah. If they wanted to stop mass server hopping, they could simply introduce cooldowns on it. At the same time, there's no option to move an entire server's worth of characters to a new server, which sucks. I tire of the Timeless isle PVP stuff and would probably consider bouncing servers, but you can't transfer gold cross-server, and fuck going to a new server broke.

you can't transfer gold? isn't it just limited to a certain amount based on character level? i absolutely remember transferring gold not only to a new server, but to the other faction (via the neutral AH on the destination server).

Free is all fun and games until every hacked account has characters moved everywhere and it's a huge mess.
