Xbox One headset adapter coming March, costs $25

You'll finally be able to use third-party headsets on Xbox One. But be prepared to pay $25 for that privilege.

There was outrage when Xbox fans discovered they could not use their existing 360 peripheral on Xbox One--including headsets. While Microsoft eventually bundled their official headset with the system to appease gamer uproar, those who used third-party headsets were left out in the cold. With premium headsets sometimes going into three digits, the inability to use those headsets was upsetting for some.

As promised, Microsoft is readying a adapter, which allows compatible third-party headsets to work with the console. In addition, you'll be able to feed in-game audio to your headset by connecting it to the back of Xbox One's optical cable via RCA cables. It'll cost $25.

For $80, gamers can purchase the newly-announced Xbox One Stereo Headset, also available in early March. The bundle includes the adapter and like the PlayStation stereo headsets, will allow gamers to hear both in-game audio as well as chat. You'll also be able to balance the game and chat audio levels to hear exactly what you want.

Just out of curiosity - if Sony was releasing a similar adapter would the story get the snarky remark?

Pretty sure you can plug any old usb headset into the ps4 and it'll work.

PS4 allows both USB and BT devices. It's a universal standard. Paying $25 for a dongle in 2014 does seem legit effing dumb, to be fair, no?

Now that the official headset is out, I bet third-party people will be selling headsets that work with the Xbox One without the need for the adapter. Could they have done this without the need for the adapter? Probably, I don't know. I think the bigger news is the official set coming in at $80 that is going to seriously put a damper on Turtle Beach selling shit for $199.

The Turtle Beach headsets at the lower end may lose some market share, but the higher end headsets that have surround sound, wireless connectivity, or both will likely enjoy the same level of success.

But these $80 headsets ARE wireless. They are getting the game audio from the controller's connection. Even the higher-end "wireless" headsets still need a chat cable "wire".

Doesn't the PS4 also have the standard phone headset jack on the controller?

Yup, 3.5mm and you can even choose to have the in-game audio fed through the controller port as well, though I think it's only in stereo(doubt many will complain given the convenience).

BUT.. the new premium ones they're releasing DOES make you plug in a dongle into the PS4 and PS3... It plugs into a USB port on the back of the console.

No I don't think so - when I got my 360 I never expected all my Xbox accessories would work with it. I had to buy new "360" stuff or new "PS3" stuff. This sounds like a converter to me and its pricing is in line with other console accessories.

I'll agree that not being able to use your standard 360 headset was to be expected, and really not a big deal; I think people had every right to complain if they shelled out $100+ on premium headsets that were still in perfect working order. I personally think $25 is a bit much for an adapter, and I would've preferred to have the adapter bundled with the console than that God awful headset.

at launch you could have bought an 8 dollar chat cable for ps4 from TB to get your old TB headset going- voice that is. headphones worked.

If Sony was releasing a similar adapter, I'm sure that would happen. Since you can use any USB headset on the PS4, that question makes no sense.

So, in this article is says "you'll be able to feed in-game audio to your headset by connecting it to the back of Xbox One's optical cable via RCA cables."

How do I do this?? Another adapter I'm assuming?

My guess is this is for things like the Astro's that needed the game-audio connection from the Xbox and then mixed in the chat from the controller.

It was my understanding that the newer Xbox One headsets were going to be able to get game-audio over the controller (like the official Stereo Headset sounds like it's doing).

Wait....yeah...in what planet is this possible. Optical is digital and RCA is analog. That makes no sense.

I think the bigger announcement is the Stereo Headset for $80 that does game and chat without the need to connect to your Xbox One outputs.
