We won't beat around the bush. We think PlayStation Plus is a great deal. And apparently, many PS4 owners agree. In fact, "more than half" of PS4 owners have subscribed to Sony's premium subscription service.

With more than 4 million PS4s in the wild, that means there are over 2 million Plus subscribers on PS4. While Instant Game Collection is undoubtedly one draw for subscribers, a Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer on Sony's next-gen console, which could also explain the high conversion rate. In addition, systems include a free trial membership which automatically convert to recurring paid subscriptions if not canceled.

"More than half of the people that have now gotten their hands [on] the PS4 have actually signed up for PS Plus service, which bodes very well for us as well," Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai said in a conference call with investors (via VentureBeat).

Maybe because a lot those people need PS+ to play BF4 along with other online games that aren't free to play?

No offense, but I get the feeling that it's a slow news day.

I don't have a ps4, but this sounds like it makes the argument about Xbox Gold (vs. ps3) a moot point. No? I know the Shack has no love for making Gold required for most things on the 360.

the math changed when multiplayer began requiring a subscription on PS4 like the Xbox

No. XBL still gates things like Netflix behind the Live wall, essentially limiting the app base. While PS+, for the most part, does not.

Why does it say "More than half" as if there's a catch and its not actually half?

That number is very believable given the PS4's Plus requirement for multiplayer, but I wonder how many of those are members that got the free month of PS+. Probably not a lot, but some people were making the argument that Sony's claim of astronomical rise in PS+ subs was falsely inflated by the one month free with every console.
