Ubisoft and Sony Pictures announced a deal today to develop a full-length feature film based on the popular "Rabbids" characters. This would seem to be an extension of its success with the Rabbids cartoon, which which boasts more than two million viewers per episode.

The production will be overseen by representatives for both Ubisoft Motion Pictures and Sony. No plans were announced for attached writers or directors, and no release date was given, so today's announcement is likely the very earliest steps of the deal.

"Sony Pictures has tremendous experience developing hybrid live-action-and-animated blockbusters for audiences around the world, which makes them a natural fit for what we want to achieve with a Rabbids film," Ubisoft Motion Pictures executive director Jean-Julien Baronnet said in the announcement. "This deal deepens our partnership with Sony Pictures and highlights our holistic approach to bringing Ubisoft's brands to new audiences while still maintaining the brands' creative integrity."

Agreed, however, I'm not sure I could watch a full length film.

I dunno thats basically what Despicable Me gimmick was, the completely ripped off the Rabbids and it was more or less an entire movie of that.

As part of my job I had to look at Ubisoft Entertainment SA's annual report. They have a whole bunch of "movie" subsidiaries:

      Ubisoft Motion Pictures SARL
      Ubisoft Motion Pictures Rabbids SAS
Ubisoft Motion Pictures Assassin’s Creed SAS
Ubisoft Motion Pictures Far Cry SAS
      Ubisoft MotionPictures Splinter Cell SAS
Ubisoft Motion Pictures Ghost Recon SAS

So a few more "deals" to be announced in future? They seem keen to retain creative control.
