Sega is going back to the drawing board (again) for Sonic the Hedgehog, giving their mascot a whole new look for 2014. The publisher has announced an all-new Sonic game set to come later this year called Sonic Boom. The games will hit Wii U and 3DS and coincide with a new CG animated series of the same name. Sonic Boom for Wii U and 3DS is being billed as the prequel to the upcoming television series and will not be developed by Sonic Team. Instead, the Wii U version is helmed by Big Red Button, while the 3DS version is being worked on by Sanzaru Games (Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time). The Sega blog explains that the games will feature Sonic's signature speed, but will also introduce new exploration elements and open arena combat, along with a new tethering mechanic called the Enerbeam. Players will be able to control Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy, each featuring different abilities. The characters also look drastically different, further indicating Sega's new direction for the series. Sonic Boom will arrive later in 2014.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

He must have ran through some thorny bushes, or maybe barb wire.

Looks kinda interesting actually. Too bad I don't have a Wii U, and too bad the 3DS version will look nothing like that.

So, I guess they're making Amy a more strong and silent type and Tails basically less whiny. I can work with that. Amy was always way too annoying and Tails way to whiny. Sonic and Knuckles seem like they'll remain mostly the same personality wise, just by judging from the concept art. Except, holy shit Knuckles has been working out. This game could be really, really, REALLY awesome, but still I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Since they usually are on a Nintendo system why not do a cross over with Mario where two players can control Sonic and Mario in Co-Op (or swap back and forth); imagine Sonic being able to use Mario's power-ups such as a mushroom to get larger, or Mario using Sonic's rings, perhaps to run faster. And how they would approach the same puzzles but solve them in a different way. Visiting each others worlds and characters would be epic, this game needs to happen. They could even go back and revisit some well known levels, but now you can solve them in multiple ways.

Perhaps a retro setting where they start out as 16-bit (or even 8-bit) incarnations of themselves during the height of the Sega and Nintendo console wars. They are fighting each-other but then realize they have to work together to fight being outdated by the future; so they must travel to future game engines where they experience enhanced visuals, then 3D, better textures, HD, true 3D, and so on. They would realize that they were not real but that would not matter, they still have a mission to deal with and it affects the real world as well, so whoever wins the game first or does something spectacular in the game is rewarded by Sega and Nintendo IRL: something big like a character or location named after them and then their name or whatever is imported over a place-holder in this game, so Unknown Town becomes Their Name Town.

Thus the game is about a return to greatness for both characters and Sega/Nintendo; while simultaneously breaking the forth wall in multiple ways and being completely aware of it.

I am praying for a good Sonic game; please Sega don't leave the Nintendo-Sega Alliance something that people will look down and frown upon.

I watched the tv series trailer and it kinda harkens back to the first Sonic cartoons that were cheesy and funny. Rewatched the game trailer with sound this time, and this game looks promising.

The legs look so freakishly long.

Really hoping that SammySega will strike gold with this game. It's been a long time since a good Sonic game came out and it will be very very interesting to see what not Team Sonic made big Sonic game will be like.

Just hope that I could mute the voices, I have always hated so much those earbleeding teen voices of the characters, especially Sonic and Amy.

Though in this trailer the voices somehow sound better. I'm positively surprised.

        Bring it on.
