Microsoft announced yet another channel in its ever-increasing line-up of Xbox apps today. The GoPro channel will launch on Xbox 360 this spring and subsequently on Xbox One in summer, offering curated video content captured by GoPro cameras.

In addition to watching streaming video captured by camera owners, Gold members will be able to make purchases of the cameras and accessories directly through the app itself. As the announcement points out, this is the first time Microsoft has put packaged goods purchases into an app. That's not counting edible items, apparently. Of course, it still locks the purchase behind Gold, similar to Netflix and Hulu Plus.

"GoPro is a content-driven company. We enable consumers and professionals around the world to capture and share mesmerizing video and photo content that excites and inspires a global audience," GoPro founder Nicholas Woodman, said in the announcement. "Our GoPro Channel app will make it easy for millions of global Xbox Live customers to watch GoPro originally-produced and ‘best of’ user-generated content on their televisions at home. We’re excited to align ourselves with Microsoft and the Xbox brand as we believe our customers share the same desire to enjoy the type of immersive, experiential content that our cameras enable."

....because Amazon doesn't work and neither does the already included video player? How is this useful?

It records from the GoPro, so you have to strap your 360 to your head and have a really long extension cord.
