Xbox Games with Gold giving Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War in February

Microsoft has revealed the pair of games coming free to Xbox Live Gold members in February, namely action-tower defense Toy Soldiers: Cold War and Techland's FPS action-RPG Dead Island. They're a fair enough pair of games, but, well, February's PlayStation Plus lineup includes Metro: Last Light, Payday 2, and Outlast.

Dead Island will arrive on February 1, Microsoft's Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb revealed on his blog, then Toy Soldiers: Cold War will follow on February 16.

Dead Island usually costs $19.99 to download on Xbox 360, though I can't help but point out that the Game of the Year Edition, which also includes the game's two $10 DLC packs, is only $14.99 on disc from Amazon. Toy Soldier: Cold War costs $14.99.

I agree, Dead Island is a good game but others in this thread pretty much have summed up what I think about this months offerings.

LOVE Dead Island. That's a great grab, at $free.99. Definitely co-op with friends.

Dead Island is pretty good, if everybody didn't already own it, but Toy Soldiers? Really? I don't know if it's hubris or corporate level stupidity that makes them do these decisions, but shit like this is making me buy a PS 4 instead of the Xboner.

The fact that you use the word xboner makes me think there is more to your choice of ps4 over xb1.

Well yeah, not a fan of many of the new features, which won't even be available in Europe anyway, most likely. I played the shit out of my 360 and didn't even buy a Ps3, for the record.

I don't own it. That makes this a good giveaway.

Yup. Also, they're both really good games.

It's because if they offered some awesome game, non-Gold subscribers would simply use those 48 hour subscription codes that seem to multiply like AOL CDs (or buy a one month subscription for $6), grab the game, and never think about Gold again.

I'm sure they have an easy enough way to lock out people on trial-codes from downloading these games.

It would be easy enough to find out. Still, isn't the license they are giving away more generous than PS+? As in the games you get are yours forever, not just when you stop subscribing. I'd expect that is easily one reason these titles are often what they are. On the flip side though, tying them to the subscription and not the user makes for more incentive to keep up the subscription.

What's insulting is not only are those fairly weak offers (no GOTY version), but most of those games have been Deal of the Week shortly before their appearance on GwG.

A lot of people bought them in Q4 2013 and now they're given away for free. What the hell.

Before the PSN's switch to require money for multiplayer, I would have agreed with Alastayr. It was pretty insulting compared to PSN's offering.

As they both are paid services for Multiplayer now, I would not us that language. It's just inferior, especially right now when Live cannot even get groups working right.

I think it's an insult to give a game away for free now, after you advertised it as 67% off not two months ago.

Two months might be a long time for some, but Xbox sales happen rarely, the catalog is huge and in the greater scheme of things, I'd rather get something free tomorrow than on sale today.

What gives, I don't even get Dead Island. Our replacement game is Metro 2033. Yes, the first one.

With both consoles you get "free" games in addition to your multiplayer now. Microsoft's offerings are still sub-par. Even if you don't compare them to Sony's efforts.

If I had sex rawdog with your entire immediate family and pets and then wiped my freshly soiled and sloppy dick on your pillow... That would be insulting. Offering games you don't want on XBL Gold is just disappointing. Stop being such a dramatic internet nerd.

Tell me something, because I don't know*, now that PS+ is required for multi in Sonyville, dies this only apply to PS4 users, or must PS3 users also subscribe to PS+?

Remember when Sony required all users to agree to an amended EULA, and if they did not agree, were instructed to not return to PSN? I chose the latter.
