Before Microsoft bought the rights to Gears of War, its newly-formed Black Tusk Studio was working on a Halo-scaled original franchise. However, now that Black Tusk is assigned to Gears of War, the fate of their original IP is unknown.

In a pair of tweets (via IGN), the Xbox Jobs account explains: "[Black Tusk] has been working on an all original IP since its inception, we've just brought the GoW franchise into our portfolio and have not yet determined the future of the new IP at this point."

Shacknews has contacted Microsoft for clarification.

What about the fate of the 2K "San Francisco area" studio announced as "headed by Rod Fergusson" back in September 2013? http://www.shacknews.com/article/81317/new-2k-games-studio-opening-headed-by-gears-of-war

A number of 2K Marin staffers reportedly were transferred there after that studio closed down last October: http://www.shacknews.com/article/81637/significant-layoffs-at-2k-marin-developer-of-the-bureau-xcom

We actually received a comment from 2K, which we weren't able to publish on the site yesterday. Here you go:

"We can confirm that Rod Fergusson is no longer with 2K. Any projects the new studio is working on are unaffected by his departure. We wish Rod the best of luck in his future endeavors."

That's kind of a bummer. Do people really want more Gears over something new?

Microsoft obviously does because it will make them more money, but it was once a new property itself. Gotta start somewhere.

      Yeah, fuck new IPs.

This shit makes me so angry. 2007 was the last great year of new IPs and it seems the second half of the generation was just piggybacking on the success that came from the risks that were taken with new properties in the first half of the generation. Now new AAA IPs are really fucking rare and it's enraging.

Fergusson keeps changing jobs like people change shirts.

That must be one interesting CV.
