Update: GameStop is now restoring pre-orders, with the original removal being described "a glitch in the system."
Original story follows.
Something is amiss about the Wii U version of Watch Dogs. GameStop is canceling pre-orders of Ubisoft's delayed open-world hacking adventure. What makes this situation so curious is that only the Wii U version is being canceled. Pre-orders for every other platform remain intact.
While Shacknews has contacted Ubisoft, a rep from the company declined to comment on the situation to Kotaku. "Stores in the US have been instructed to tell customers who pre-ordered the game on Wii U to shift their pre-order to something else or to have it cancelled," their report notes.
The Wii U version of the game was actually the last version to be announced, after the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC versions. Lagging sales of Nintendo's console could be the reason behind a potential cancellation, and given that it's the only version of the game to be outsourced, it might make sense for the publisher to give up on a port that may not perform up to expectations. For Wii U owners, the loss of Watch Dogs will be a heavy blow to a library that's struggling to receive third-party support.
