Compaq's Super Computer

by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 04, 2000 6:15am PDT

According to CNet Compaq and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center have won a $36 million contract to build a super computer for the National Science Foundation. This computer will have a whopping 2,728 CPUs and will be used for academic research including biophysics, global climate change, astrophysics and materials science.

The system will be capable of processing 6 trillion mathematical calculations per second at peak speed and a sustained speed of around 1 trillion calculations, ranking it among the most powerful supercomputers in the world.
Sounds pretty damn speedy for me. I don't have that $36 million in my wallet right now though.

  • Compaqs are utter garbage. I'm sure you all know. When I tried to upgrade my Compaq's memory a couple years ago, because of the layout, the computer could only read 1/2 of the 32 meg proprietary chip. Seriously. Boy did I learn a lesson. Build from scratch, it's the only way. Just don't buy from CompuCare. Their shit is garbage. I got a bad mobo, called the mfcr. support line (before i figured it out), and some asian dude (haha stupid american) told me that if it didn't beep, well, I must have fucked it up. While I was trying to tell him, well if it didn't beep, you must have fucked it up.
