StarCraft 2 patch 2.1 makes custom maps and mod tools free

StarCraft II has received a major update, with patch 2.1 offering Arcade mode, custom games, all three SC2 races, and a gaggle of mod tools to Starter Edition owners for free.

Blizzard is in a very giving mood today. StarCraft II has deployed its 2.1 patch, which offers a lot of major changes. The biggest addition is that the Arcade mode, custom games, and all three StarCraft II races are now free-to-play for all players.

Newcomers can download the StarCraft II Starter Edition from Battle.net free of charge and get access to the aforementioned content. Blizzard is also implementing Extension Mods (allowing players to apply SC2 mods to melee maps), clan-initiated Events, an increased level cap, and a remastered soundtrack.

Most interesting, perhaps, is that the 2.1 patch gives would-be modders access to StarCraft II Art Tools, the set of plug-ins and 3ds Max 2011 scripts used to create the full game.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

That is pretty generous. I wonder if they've found that sales of HOTS have not been as good as they projected, so they are doing this to bulk up numbers before they commit to the 3rd expansion for Protoss.

HotS sold at least a couple million, and they've already committed to Legacy of the Void.

Blizzard has a few avenues they're trying to break into the free to play market (Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm), and this is just one of them (or an enabler for Heroes of the Storm?).

what's the point of getting the third expansion if you're not into the single player, does it bring new units or anything?

If SC2's single player is anything like SC1's, then I'll definitely buy it one day. Haven't been in the mood for an RTS since I was spoiled by Supreme Commander though.

Yes, it does add new units and capabilities to the factions. Not a ton, because they aren't trying to reinvent the entire game. But hots did add some additional complexity to strategy.

HotS sales were fine, it's the multiplayer that's hurting... LoL/DOTA is stealing all the players

You're probably right. Lobby traffic has dropped a lot faster than after the original launch. Post holiday and all the AAA release only added salt to the wound.

Well, and probably 90% of the games are cheese-laden.

This could be huge now that this Starbow mod is out.

smart move IMO. the MP should move to F2P and they should start selling building skins etc. it'd really bump up the player pool. they could also give players the option to purchase the campaigns in the F2P client.

I really still enjoy teh campaigns and am looking forward to my protoss campaign.

It was really sad that Blizzard dropped mods after all the Tower Def in SC1 and DOTA in WC3.

Vanilla SC2 just gets too stale. The meta moves at a crawl versus DOTA/LOL.
