Starbound's next patch includes final character wipe

Starbound is preparing to deploy a new patch next week, which will include the game's final character wipe before its final release.

Chucklefish's extraterrestrial sandbox adventure, Starbound, is preparing their next update. The patch (expected next week) will fix some lingering bugs and also introduce some keen new game modes that introduce some punishing new twists. It's also set to precede the game's final character wipe, as the game gears up for its final release.

Chucklefish explains that the patch contains a fix for save files, thus the necessity of the character wipe. The developer says this wipe will erase characters, ships, and worlds, but it will be the final time such a wipe will occur.

The new game modes will include permadeath and drop-everything-on-death modes. Both game modes are fairly self-explanatory, as the former will make players start completely from scratch upon death, while the latter will result in fallen players dropping their entire inventory.

The full list of changes can be found on the Starbound website (via Polygon). Starbound is available now through Steam Early Access and is coming soon to PS4.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

So is Starbound basically interstellar Terraria? (Which would be awesome)

Terraria pales in comparison to Starbound. I've played both extensively. There is easily double (more likely triple) more "game" in Starbound.

Well and it's some of the same people, building on the lessons they learned making Terraria. I think that's important to note.

The mod scene is going to make this what everyone wanted out of both Terraria and Minecraft.

Looking forward to this. I put the game down since I had explored quite a bit of the content but I want more.
