Mafia dev hit with layoffs as 2K shuffles staff

2K is shaking things up at 2K Czech, creator of the Mafia series. The publisher is closing 2K Czech's Prague office, shifting some people over to the one in Brno, bringing some over to 2K headquarters in California, and some, well, they're just plumb out of a job. What exactly the studio has been up to since 2010's Mafia II is secret, with no new games publicly announced.

"This transition will both strengthen the integration of the 2K Czech team with our award winning development teams, and better align cross-functional business practices," 2K said in a statement provided to Eurogamer. "As part of this realignment, we are adjusting our staffing levels, resulting in the elimination of some positions.""

It's long been rumoured that Mafia 3 is, or was, in development at 2K Czech.

2K Czech was previously named Illusion Softworks. Though it's best known for Mafia, it also made games including two the tactical shooter series Hidden & Dangerous and Vietcong.

Noooo. Hope this isn't bad news. Mafia II was amazing and I loved H&D2.

It really sucks when a dev bought by a publisher is closed.

Mafia II was a horrible abortion of what was intended for the game.

      No loss.

Hidden & Dangerous games should be brought to GOG and Steam.

Great games, though the characters movement was clunky at least in the first one.
