Video games were recently highlighted by the Smithsonian, but smaller galleries have been delving into the medium as well. New York's Museum of the Moving Image has announced an exhibit covering the history of the Madden NFL series, not coincidentally coinciding with the upcoming Super Bowl that will also be hosted in the New York/New Jersey area. The gallery will be open starting today, January 9, and run through February 23.

The exhibition, titled 'Madden NFL: 25 Years and Running,' features five games from different points in the series' evolution: John Madden Football on the Apple II, Madden NFL 94 on Sega Genesis, Madden NFL 99 on PlayStation, Madden NFL 2005 on Xbox, and the most recent, Madden NFL 25 on the Xbox One. All but the original are playable in the exhibition, and NFL 25 is given a special big-screen presentation. The exhibition also features a timeline of the series' milestones.

The museum is located in Astoria, New York. It's currently also hosting a exhibition on indie games, titled 'Indie Essentials.'

"There is no better time than now to present the story of the Madden NFL phenomenon at the Museum," said Museum executive director Carl Goodman, in the announcement. "The Super Bowl is in town and the Madden NFL franchise is celebrating its 25th anniversary; plus the Museum presented the first ever exhibition devoted to video games anywhere 25 years ago. Madden NFL is a premier example of how a sports simulation video game has influenced how the sport is presented on television and experienced by fans."
