  • Wild Card weekend Tailgate picks

The email I sent out to the group to get their picks follows below. It includes my quick takes on the games. Then below that I put a game by game list of our picks.

[in the voice of Jim Mora] Playoffs?!

Didn't think we'd let the Wild Card weekend slip by, did you? Kickoff is tomorrow (Sat) so get your picks in before then. Matchups, lines, and my analysis (FWIW) below.

    Kansas City +1 at Indianapolis
How much do you buy the line that the Colts are peaking at the right time? I don't. While I don't love the Chief's, I do like the combination of Jamaal Charles as playmaker and Alex Smith as no mistakes field general. Colts will bring plenty of fire at home and it will be loud in Lucas Oil field but I'll take the point and go with the Chiefs.

    New Orleans +2.5 at Philadelphia
Circumstances could not work out much worse for the Saints. For starters, they haven't traveled well all season but that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's going to be cold, maybe not as bad as Green Bay, but cold enough and the Saints will be without their leading rusher, Pierre Thomas. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, the Saints face the league rushing leader, McCoy. And if ever there was a D set to be taken advantage of by the high tempo offence scheme, it's Ryan's gambling pressure schemes.

I'll give the 2.5 and take the Eagles.

    San Diego +7 at Cincinnati
That's a lot of points...but not enough. Sorry Ozzie, but the Bengals at home, also in the cold, are too much for the Chargers. Bengals D will stifle the Chargers offence while a steady dose of Giovani Bernard helps them control the clock.

Though it's a lot to lay, I'll give the 7 and take the Bengals.

San Francisco -3 at Green Bay
Football wisdom says that the home field "tundra" gives an advantage to Green Bay. I agree, up to a point but this forecast calls for it to be so cold--coldest game ever--that the temperature works against the home team. It's going to be so cold that the ball will be an icy, heavy rock. Throwing and catching it will be a real challenge.

That hurts the Packers more than the Niners. While I like Eddie Lacy and his style (straight ahead runner) fits the situation, the offence still runs through Rodgers and the passing game. The Niners, however, can take a page from last season and combo their strong D with the read option to control the game. In fact, I'm going out on a limb and saying it will be a QB who wins the game and it will be Cap, not with his arm but with his legs. I see him as the Niners leading rusher, with Gore a nice counterpunch.

I'm laying the 3 and taking the Niners.

    Good luck everyone!

Kansas City +1 Garnett, Jeff, Andrea
    Indianapolis Ozzie, Rich, Dave

    New Orleans +2.5 [nobody]
Philadelphia Garnett, Jeff, Andrea, Ozzie, Rich, Dave

    San Diego +7 Jeff, Ozzie
    Cincinnati Garnett, Andrea, Rich, Dave

San Francisco -3 Garnett, Jeff, Andrea
    Green Bay Ozzie, Rich, Dave
