True to its subtitle, M&M X is a proper turn-based, first-person affair, just like the good old days everyone says are way better than these bad news days. If you fancy, you can still buy into the Early Access program, which contains the game's first act.

Here's some chaps from developer Limbic Entertainment reflecting on the game's "open development," which seems to be a fancy term for writing dev blogs and having forums for fans to post on. They have responded to some feedback though, giving the example of changing the pace of the day and night cycle.

Anyone here that are fans of the old World of Xeen games and in the early access care to comment on the quality of this game?

I actually didn't play the Xeen games (except for a few minutes after buying a M&M package a while back) but I did play M&M 1-3 back in the day. This is very much like the old Might and Magic games with grid-based movement and turn based combat. Instead of menus you are clicking buttons, but it's the same idea. I bought into early access and I played a few hours a couple months ago and really liked it. If you like dungeon crawlers and don't mind that it's grid-based movement instead of free roaming (some people bitch about that) then I imagine you'll like this. It's a bit like Grimrock but with slower turn-based combat and more diverse areas. I wouldn't mind having more than 4 characters in the party... but it's not a huge issue. I stopped playing because they are still working on the game and might break save games, so after a bit I figured I'd wait until the final game is out. What I played was a lot of fun though.

Is it actually turn-based, like, if I walk away nothing happens? Because I wasn't a fan of Grimrock's more real-time setup.

It is straight up turn-based. Monsters are on the map moving around, they move one grid-space at a time and they do not move until you move. So if you just let it sit, nothing happens. A lot of people on the forums bitched and moaned about that, but just as many (if not more) still love that style of play (like me) which you actually don't see so much anymore. So the game is very 'old school' in a way, but that is just fine with me.

look forward to that. I've been itching to buy it since i saw it existed on the early access thing. very excite.

Sweet. I'll have to check that out when it releases then.

Be sure to check the game's forums. It made me think twice about buying this, even though I am an old Might & Magic fan.

Well, I'm not exactly sure what he's alluding to but if I had to guess... there is a bit of a split among Might and Magic fans and you can see this in the forums. A lot of people want a more direct sequel to M&M 6-9 which were more along the lines of Elder Scrolls games where they were more like open world games where you could freely walk wherever you want and the combat was more action based.

This game is more along the lines of a sequel to M&M 4 and 5 which were still grid-based games with turn-based combat. Some people see that as a major step backwards, others (like me) are totally fine with that. I kind of feel like Skyrim and other games kind of did the free-roaming action-based style of exploring and combat pretty damn well. It's nice to play something a bit different.

The team has said that this was just what they went for because the only had a certain amount of budget and wanted to make something along the lines of Grimrock with a Might and Magic design and style. That's basically what this is. Some people also believe that if this game does well and the team pulls in some good sales.. .maybe M&M XI will be more like 6-9. Which I'd be fine with as well.

I loved M&M 1 and 2 on the Apple IIe and played the crap out of them. Might and Magic 2 at the time was the most gorgeous game I had ever seen on the Apple II. I remember looking at magazines which showed screenshots of the game before it came out and I simply could not believe the game would actually look like that. Then I got it for my birthday and it actually DID look that good. I actually still have the game in the box with the map etc. It was a great game.

I'm so glad it's turn based and they didn't listen to the whiners. I loved 6 and 7 but I wanted a turn based game.

While some people are happy, there is an overwhelming amount of negative feedback about both the game and the lack of actual interaction with the devs that was promised. I was very much ready to buy in, but not after reading through the feedback.

Of course if you disqualified games based on people complaining on forums, you'd never be able to buy anything. I'd wait for proper reviews and decide based on that.

Absolutely. That's what I did. I decided to wait. But in this case the people complaining in the forums seem to have legitimate complaints that are not being addressed in a system that was supposed to include them in the process. It's actually quite interesting reading through the posts; if it had been at all balanced by proponents I might have tried it, as it is not particularly expensive for all you get. Instead I'll see what happens. I'm just giving the warning to check it out before impulse buying, as you can already purchase the game.

Well, I for one have played most of the first section of the game and enjoyed it quite a bit. And I'm a fan of Might and Magic 1 - 3, Wizardry and Legend of Grimrock.

That's the basic idea, but with more diverse environments, more story, cities and turn based combat instead of real-time.
