Dark Souls 2 'will be a good PC experience'

The PC port of Dark Souls was "sort of half-assed," From Software told us earlier this year, and gosh, wasn't it just, with wonky controls, and a fixed 720p resolution until a fan's mod fixed that. These problems were actually "expected to a certain extent," From has now said frankly, and reiterated its plans to make things a lot nicer on PC for Dark Souls II.

"This is going to sound bad but our main priority was to get the game onto the PC as fast as possible, because people wanted it on the PC," Dark Souls II producer Takeshi Miyazoe told Edge. He explained that "the PC market in Japan is so minimal" that a port wasn't at all planned until the campaigning from North American and European fans, and development was hasty.

"Even with the lack of experience of working on a PC platform we still did our best to try to get it out as fast as possible. [The problems] were expected to a certain extent." Minor details like custom resolutions, more control options, and better performance "would have taken too much time for us to implement it, test it and get it up to the level people expected," Miyazoe said.

But the sequel, oh, the sequel will be different, he says.

"For Dark Souls II we are developing on PC from the beginning. We realise what PC games typically require, and I can assure you that the PC version of Dark Souls II will be a good PC experience for PC gamers." You'll be able to choose between keyboard and mouse or a controller, for starters, though Miyazoe still recommends using a controller.

Dark Souls II is due March 11 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version will follow "shortly thereafter," giving time to make it "compatible with as many specs as possible."

no details, old info was that the pc version will run at 60fps. what they showed at the ign reveal was the pc build. console will run at 30fps.

I saw somewhere that Dark Souls sold ~300k on the PC. I'm wondering if that was enough to justify the cost to port it. I hope it was, and I hope the PC version comes very soon after the console versions. More than anything, though, I hope we don't need anything like DSfix to keep it from looking like muddy arse.

Given that it was a niche game that had respectable sales on consoles, I'm surprised it even hit 300K units on PC. I imagine DS2 will do better on PC since I'm sure people that have a capable PC will choose the PC version over its 360/PS3 counterparts.

Yeah but the word-of-mouth for this game is really on another level. The PC version obviously did well enough for them to declare that the PC would be the lead platform for the sequel.

That just seems low for a game that is still talked about passionately on a daily basis all over the internet. I have to imagine that it continues to sell very consistently, although that's just spec.

Source for the PC is lead platform is from a Q&A with From, synopsis/other details in this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=53550765&postcount=1

conservatively (and depending on franchise/genre see battlefield games) speaking the pc ports sell approximately 15% of the overall sales. rpg games in particular sell over a long period of time which finds its reflection in the price. dark souls kept its price stable and was always in the top spots whenever amazon or steam did a sale. combined with the hype around the game and the fact that it until very recently when it was $7,50 never fell below the 15 dollar threshold.

if the 300k you list are accurate it still would have been a smashing success for the pisspoor port that probably didnt cost much. thanks to folks like durante and other modders this was no issue though.

given that they made a switch from the sony engine and are getting groundwork work done for the new consoles which are basically x86 pc architecture i'd say we can be hopeful that the claims that the pc was the lead platform this time are true.

Hah, I don't care who it is as long as somebody makes a main thread where everybody can post. I hate it when there are 10 different threads going on about the same game. And this will just be one of those games where people will have A LOT to talk about.

Seems like DS2 will come out around the time I'll have Demon's Souls finished. Do you guys think I should just jump right into DS2 at that point and join in on the fun, or get through Dark Souls first?

I'd play through Dark Souls. The interface/mechanical/quality of life improvements that are likely to come in Dark Souls 2 will make it harder to go back later.

Definitely play Dark Souls. I don't know if you've started it yet or not but it's arguably a better overall game than Demon's Souls and is generally an incredible experience.
