Sometimes, canceling a game can be a great source of inspiration. Ubisoft was working on a driving game, potentially to be part of the Driver franchise. However, after its cancellation, it laid down the foundation to become Watch Dogs--Ubisoft's anticipated open world adventure.

"This was years ago. Then we were thinking, 'no, this is not the way we want to go with a driving game,' so we cancelled that and restarted," Ubisoft president Laurent Detoc explained. "The decision was made that there was another driving game being made and this one should be an open-world game where the guy comes out of the car and does other things."

Those other things now involve hacking into people's cell phones and remotely controlling the power grid of a city. That's pretty nifty, right?

While the in-progress driving game could have become a new Driver game, Detoc is careful to avoid saying that Driver was canceled in favor of Watch Dogs. "I wouldn't say that Driver became Watch Dogs, because that's not true," he told IGN. "That's not really what happens. What happens is that a game gets cancelled, and then you take pieces of that game to make a new one."

Watch Dogs was originally slated to launch with the next-gen consoles. However, it was delayed due to quality concerns from the publisher.
