The social RPG Firefly Online is coming next summer, according to developer QMx. On top of that, the studio has announced that it will be launching on PC and Mac in addition to the previously announced iOS and Android.

Sci-fi site io9 (via IGN) reports that it it also may expand to other platforms, and that price and pre-orders will be announced shortly. The initial release will let you be a Browncoat captain, but the team is considering adding other factions via DLC. The preview also showed off some concept art and renders of the "free flight system" that lets you navigate around the Verse, but we still haven't seen the actual game in action.

As previously reported, you'll be able to customize your ship, recruit a crew, and take on jobs (quests) to make a living. Find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

There's so little info about this game it's difficult to get excited about it. But, the description so far sounds kinda weak. Actually, the more I think about it the more concerned I get that they'll be able to make it a real "Firefly" game capturing the atmosphere of the series. 13 episodes isn't a lot to draw from.

Yeah, I've played the Firefly RPG (tabletop) and it suffered from a similar problem. We rarely found good stories/adventures that weren't basically just rehashes of the show. The universe itself just isn't that robust or compelling, IMO.

I've read about probably a half dozen Firefly MMOs in various stages of development that have ended up not happening. Even if they manage to get this one off the ground, I seriously doubt it will be worth much.

I kind of have to disagree with you on assumption that not enough material exists to make this game feel like it's taking place in the Firefly Universe. Star Wars really only gave us about 7 hours and 6-7 planets in the original movies and look at how rich of a Universe spawned from that.

Firefly seemed to be always changing the Universe from episode to episode and making up new worlds as it went along. As long as they touch on the Chinese language, Companions, the Civil War, Reavers, The Alliance, Firefly Class ships, and a mix between American Old West and Futuristic Sci-Fi Tech they should be fine. It'll actually be better off with so much flexibility in the locations, ships, and weapons.

But will it have the body armor from Starship Troopers? If it doesn't then this game isn't canon.

While this game has a snow ball's chance of being good wasn't there a similar game for Battle Star Galactica that managed to stay afloat for a while?
