Fez sells a million copies across all platforms

Fez has sold one million copies across all platforms, Polytron has announced.

28

It took well over a year from its initial release, but the indie puzzle-platformer Fez has reached a million sales across all platforms. Developer Polytron announced the number and thanked everyone who contributed to its success (and some who didn't).

"Thank you for buying the game!" read a note on the official site (via Kotaku). "Thank you for stealing it! Thank you for telling your friends about it! Thank you for buying it again when it came out on PC! Thank you for boycotting it so well! Thank you for putting up with the bullshit!"

Fez will no doubt increase that number as it expands to even more platforms. Polytron recently announced that it would be coming to PlayStation platforms, including PS3, PS4, and Vita. A follow-up is still unlikely, however. After announcing Fez 2, creator Phil Fish abruptly canceled it. Polytron producer Marie-Christine Bourdua subsequently promised "other stuff on the way."

You really should give it a shot. Fish is a blowhard and has a grating personality, but damn if the guy didn't make a beautiful and fun game. I treat it the same as listening to a band whose members may be douchebags individually, but whose output is still quality.

He told people to suck his dick when he won IGF under dubious circumstances. He said Japanese video games suck. He said his game was designed to be played on consoles only, so fuck PC gamers. He then called out all the people who started the boycott Fez on steam group when his game was #1 during pre-orders.

I'm sure there is more, but these are just what I could rattle off the top of my head.

I don't entirely disagree with him about Japanese games (I don't find that terribly offensive or incorrect, frankly)...but I think he's idiotic to avoid making a proper PC version due to the large sales he'd surely see on that platform.

It doesn't do much for me (this game) as I'm not a huge fan of the whole "crappy graphics as chic gaming" trend. This other news helps make me even less interesting.

He was right about Japanese games.

If I won a big award and people said it was dubious i'd tell them to fuck off too.

The pc gamer comment was clearly trolling to irritate pc gamers, which i find funny personally because we're such a bunch of humourless cunts most of the time.

Why should he be polite to a group boycotting him?

People always talk about how they dislike the faceless corporate nature of much AAA development. Well the flip side to that is indie development, its a creative space with all kinds of people and they don't usually have PR departments to keep developers silent.

If you avoid classic entertainment because you don't want to consume anything created by an asshole say goodbye to 99% of music, movies, comic books, tv shows and videogames.

Every single Japanese game is bad eh? So Zelda's and Mario's, that's pretty brazen since they sold a ton more and have been enjoyed by more. Never mind the fact the statement is just racist anyways claiming all.

Sure its a blanket statement and there are loads of exceptions. But when it comes to the creative independent space, Japan is years and years behind the west, and the whole Japanese market clings to concepts that are long out of date.

You think all Japanese video games suck? I can't say that I share it as I've enjoyed many Final Fantasy, Sega games, Nintendo games, Konami games, Capcom games, on and on. To dislike a certain genre, I can understand but to say all Japanese games suck?

                  December 10, 2013 12:32 PM

It wasn't racist. He (as well as Ed and Tommy from Team Meat, Jon Blow and I think a couple of other people*) was asked what he thought of modern Japanese games, since Fez, Super Meat Boy and Braid were clearly influenced by Japanese games from 30 years ago.

He said that he thought they sucked. The other panelists laughed and agreed that they don't like them either.

They were being asked to generalize, and they were put on the spot to answer this question at an event. They weren't asked their opinions on any specific genre. I assume when you're asked what you think of modern Japanese games you automatically think of 'AAA' console titles from major publishers.

This has nothing to do with the ethnicity of the people making the games, as they obviously like games made by those same people 30 years ago.

Not every game out of Japan is a stereotypical 2005 JRPG, but if you think being critical of trends within a specific development community is racism, then you think a lot of Japanese developers are racist for similarly criticizing those trends in recent years.

People on the Internet often seem to misinterpret things that should be fairly obvious because it makes a good excuse to be mad, and being mad is something people on the Internet love more than anything else.

The "Phil Fish is Racist Because He Said Japanese Games Suck" scandal always read like something out of Fox News to me. Either people were reading Tweets that took it out of context, or they willingly ignored the context to manufacture drama.

A lot of the things Fish says are jokes. They're often bad jokes that aren't funny. He expresses himself in a bit of a confrontational fashion and gets mad when people say shit about him. For these reasons he should stay the fuck off Twitter and not read forums. And get back to work on Fez 2, because I want to play it. On PC.

The question he was originally asked was about Japanese games today.

And yes the vast majority do suck in my opinion, they cling on to traditional design ideas that are long out dated, and their independent space is completely behind the west. There are a bunch of great exceptions, but the vast majority these days are either making dating sims / or trying to do terrible emulations of already dated concepts from western designers.

It was pretty dubious, though. Not unsubstantiated.

It was re-entered into IGF despite winning an award in 2008.

Per RPS, several of the jurors *worked* on the game. ( http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/07/the-competition-the-story-behind-the-igfs-critics/ )

I didn't say it wasn't unsubstantiated. I just said if I thought i'd won a prize fairly, and then other people accused me of shady behaviour, i'd be pissed. I'm not saying he or the judges are innocent.

Also i thought he was a massive cunt and horrible to work with, why are his old work pals helping him out if he's such a twat?

Japanese games do suck for the most part and besides, why is he not entitled to that opinion? He since went back on his made for consoles thing - and with good humour if I recall. People boycotted his game for petty fucking gamer sperg reasons and he trolled them? Where's the problem?
