Insomniac's Outernauts headed to iOS, dropping browser version

Insomniac's browser-based monster-collecting RPG, Outernauts, will formally end on January 31, in order to make way for a new and improved iOS version set to be released soon.

After about a year and a half, Insomniac is ready to take its monster-collection RPG, Outernauts, and re-release it as a free-to-play iOS title. Unfortunately, this will mark an end to the game's current incarnation on Facebook and Kongregate. The browser-based version of the game will be discontinued on January 31, a year and a half after it first launched.

"As of right now, we have stopped in-game purchases and will offer triple the purchased Star Gems to those who bought them within the past 24-48 hours," explained the announcement (via Kotaku).

"In addition, we will soon announce a detailed rewards structure as a thank-you to the many dedicated Outernauts browser players who may wish to try Outernauts on iOS. This is important to us, as we have come to really connect with the hardcore Outernauts community members. We want to make sure you stick with us and continue enjoying and helping make the franchise better."

Insomniac has not given a release date for the upcoming iOS (and eventual Android) version of Outernauts, but promises an overhauled experience with new content that includes more beasts, worlds, and missions.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
