Abit More XBox
by Steve Gibson, Aug 01, 2000 10:59am PDTAmazingly TheRegister actually got someone at Microsoft to talk to them a little bit more about XBox. An interesting stat mentioned in there is that there is an 80% overlap of people who buy PCs and people who buy consoles.

"abit" i thought abit would be in the x-box
is that the pun? if so - how is it related as abit have nothing to do with it? ..... yes I noticed it .. but god it's like someone pointing out "oooh that car's number plate is XYZ-786 wow!" very pc dork like.
please tell me there's a deeper pun here which totally blows my mind and entertains me for hours....

Does this mean the XBox will be overclockable via a SoftBIOS?

with burger king you can usually get a better meal when you "customize" it
with macdonalds you can get a better meal if you pick something that is "pre-designed"
this doesn't go for every one of those fast food places (kinda depends on the manager at one), but overall from the ones I've been too, that's my experience
maybe i just need to stop smoking my breakfast
BUT! People buy consoles because of the games. I first bought my n64 after playing Goldeneye at my friends house. One of my other friends just bought a n64 after playing Perfect Dark with us. If I liked sports games, I would definately buy a Dreamcast.
When I said this:
Hardware isn't the only selling point for a gaming box.
I meant, people don't buy consoles for powerful gaming machines. Sorry if that wasn't very clear.

People consider consoles because they are quick and easy gaming machines, with some fine games on them. I would know, I own a few consoles as it is. Hardware isn't the only selling point for a gaming box. Games on that system have to be good. If they are, people buy the systems.
Fillrates are surprisingly high on consoles, but even the upcoming console demo's can't do what a PC today can do. Fillrate doesn't mean as much as many people think. What makes the X-Box appealing as a peice of hardware is how the RAM is tricked out with the graphics card and cpu. That's what the PSX2 should have (so it doesn't suck like it does now), and not enough has been released about the dolphin yet, but I think with all this extra quiet time for Nintendo, they are learning from the other guys mistakes.
Dedicated universal hardware does give some nice advantages. It gives a good gaming experiance at a very cheap price.

Although I suppose you want to leave the other one up a little longer.
(i have a feeling its gonna be popular)
I can say pretty surely I won't be buying X-Box. Who needs a 600mhz p3 when I got a gigahertz right here? I have a feeling the more unpopular the x-box becomes, the less chance HALO comes to PC. Halo is the only reason I would even CONSIDER buying X-Box, and with Halo allegedly coming to PC, that makes it ZERO chance. Unless they get more selling titles (I doubt it). Who would develope games for X-Box, when they can use the extra power/user base of a PC? (Answer: Unexperianced programmers who like the universal hardware). Maybe I'm just ignorant (it's bliss).
