Black Mesa coming to retail with updated Source engine

The fan-made remake of Half-Life, Black Mesa, is coming to Steam as a retail release and will utilize an updated version of Valve's Source engine.

The fan-made Half-Life remake, Black Mesa, is about to go from eight years of developmental strife to a full-blown retail release. The volunteer development team announced on Tuesday that Black Mesa will be sold as a commercial title and will use an updated Source engine.

"We never developed Black Mesa with money in mind," said project lead Carlos Montero on the team's website (via Polygon). "Our decision to sell Black Mesa rests on two key points. One is we believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine. This lets us tackle and fix limitations instead of working around them. The second is because frankly, our team could really use the financial help."

A free version of Black Mesa released in 2012, albeit as an incomplete game. This version will continue to receive support following the paid Steam version's release, with Montero noting that the team plans to open source its maps and select assets to the modding community.

No release date has been given for Black Mesa.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Black Mesa was half finished right? Are they completing it for release?

Sounds like it. I can't imagine they'd release a retail version of an unfinished product. The new Source resources they have should also help matters a lot.

They are releasing it with a few added features, but no Xen. From what I understand, the 'campaign' isn't being supplemented in this release. They said the rest of the 'campaign' is still a ways off from being complete.

        No, they're not: http://forums.blackmesasource.com/showthread.php?t=17088

        Last paragraph:
"We've been overwhelmed by fan anticipation for Xen, and we're excited so many people are eager to conclude the game. To be totally honest however, Xen is still a ways off. Over the past year, we have spent a HUGE amount of time porting the game to a new engine and fixing hundreds of bugs. The work to port to the new engine was not because of the decision to go retail, this was work that had to be done to get Black Mesa onto Steam and support our future plans.

So, please be patient with us as we work to make Xen a stunning and worthy conclusion to Black Mesa. Until Xen is completed, we have multiple interesting additions planned for the Steam version of Black Mesa, which we will announce later on down the road."

They stopped at Xen so it's not half-finished so much as it's 77.77% finished (Xen being chapter 15 of 18, so they finished 14 essentially)

Some people would consider that 100% finished since they hate Xen.

maybe this means they will also get license to the original VO. that would be great. i mean, this is Half Life HD, for all intents and purposes, so Valve must be behind it and and in support of it now correct?

I sure hope they at least secured Gordon Freeman's original voice actor for Black Mesa.

He did say that, but he also breathed heavily! Heavy breathing is one of Gordon's most quoted lines!

I'm kind of amazed that this is even legal. I wasn't all that surprised when Valve decided not to interfere before, because it was just a fan-made mod.

Now it's a full blown retail product and Valve is continuing to look the other way? That's pretty nice of them, because we all know they could shut this down in an instant. Thanks Valve!

A full blown retail product ON STEAM.

Valve aren't so much looking the other way as backing the darned thing.

They're probably taking a lot more than 30% or whatever their usual cut is with this one.

Considering that this was going to just be a mod, it's awesome that the devs are getting a paid, be it a small or large amount.

Considering Valve basically fleshed out the entire game for them (level design, story, gameplay elements, ect) would seem fair.. assuming your assumption is true.
