Surprise! A console that had more than a million pre-orders managed to sell a million systems on day one.

"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House, said in the press release. "Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support."

The launch of PS4 unquestionably dwarfs anything PlayStation has ever done before. PS3, for example, launched with fewer than 100,000 systems in Japan. It also took two months for PS3 to reach the one million unit mark in North America.

Of course, there's a whole another console coming out this Friday. Let's see how it fares.

I don't think the comment was directed at the author of the article, but rather, Alice.

Anyone know what the preordercanceled rate is for a launch like this? I heard a lot of people saying the preordered right after the announcement and again as it neared launch that they were canceling.

Yeah I wonder the same... looking at the local craigslist listings, there are ~400 listings PER DAY for PS4s. Mind you this is the entire bay area (> 10 million population), but still, quite a lot. I think the lack of awesome launch games has a lot to do with this.

I'm guessing a lot of people remembered previous launches and thought they'd make bank reselling.
