Video: how to replace your PS4 hard drive

28

Yes, you can replace your PS4 hard drive. It's not the easiest process in the world, but it's not too shabby either. Given that every PS4 game requires hard drive installation, the 500GB drive included with the system may fill up quite quickly, so you may want to use this feature sooner rather than later.

Gamespot made a nifty new video showing off how to replace the PS4 hard drive. As you can see, it's quite easy. As a bonus, they replaced the hard drive with a SSD (solid state drive), which has the immediate benefit of making Resogun load twice as quickly. See for yourself:

A SSD will be going into my PS4 right away.

Has it been confirmed that the PS4 has the FTRIM software needed for SSD's? If it doesn't those load times will become terribly slow over time. Honestly, I'd say save your money and just by a 7200 or higher RPM 2.5" HDD; at least until SSD's have higher capacities and cheaper prices.

I believe it was told that the PS4 does not have TRIM support,
but most new SSD have built in garbage collection that should help prevent that from happening
but my experience with that has not been optimal, so TRIM is still preferred way to go.

but seeing that SSD are becoming more common these days, it stands to reason that Sony will patch in the TRIM feature on the OS level eventually.

The slowdown occurs when writing to a sector that hasn't been wiped with TRIM, yeah? Load times shouldn't be affected at all.

That's correct. There are some shitty SSDs that won't de-prioritize garbage collection during load. That will slow down loading.

You can get a USB 3.0 external SSD. Not quiet as good, but at least you can expand it.

You can use the external HD for games, etc... http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-hard-drive/

Could be nice if you are going to a friends house. Take your external HD with you and then just log into their X1 and your games are ready for you -- no idea if that scenario will actually work.

Yea, I know, but I just feel throwing everyone a bone after the 360's overpriced drives in having a replaceable one would have been nice.

I think having only 500GB HDD might be one of the bigger mistakes of both console launches. I didn't even think about it but now that they are listing XB1/PS4 game install sizes, I anticipate some measurable frustration from end users in about a year.

Totally agree. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a new hardware with a larger HDD by next Christmas. I think this will be the single biggest thing that people complain about (on both consoles)

I said this and some people laughed at me --> http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=30863604#item_30863604

I knew it, we are all going to need larger drives I am trying to decide what to do with the PS4 with the XB1 I am getting a external 2 tera right away.

To me SSD is not the ticket with the PS4 your going to run out of room way to fast, I would say go 2 tera min.

Imagine running out of space and having to nuke and re install everything that would majorly suck does the PS4 not allow external hard drives? I am going to look this up.... if it does that is what I am going to do.

I wish the new seagate 2TB drive would go on sale soon because as of now there are no 2TB drives available that fit into the PS4 (has to be less than 12.5mm thick)

Do you guys really play like, 8+ games at once?

I mean, I have a ton of shit installed on my PS3, but that's because I have no reason not to. I only actively play maybe 3 or 4 titles at a time.

That's why I'm waiting on a couple things before XB1 plunge.

        - Halo 5
        - 1 TB SKU

I'm assuming this voids your warranty? Or is the drive intended to be user-replaceable?

        No and yes.

It didn't void the warranty on the PS3, so I don't see why this would be any different. The ability to swap the hard drive at the user end was one of their bullet points during their presentations.

Apparently 90GB of the PS4's 500 is already taken without even installing a game.

A "500GB" drive is actually 465GB in proper 1024 units. Reports today have shown 408GB available on a mostly empty drive so the OS is reserving about 57GB for itself and its operations. I don't think it's all that unreasonable when you consider that includes space reserved for a restore partition, swap space, probably some sort of work area where it does background downloads, and that it's also writing the last 15 minutes or so of footage for the DVR feature.

I manage the same with Steam. I don't really need that many games installed at once and these new consoles also allow you to start playing before the entire install in complete.

If you are getting an SSD, do yourself a favor and get the new super-slim 7mm SSDs. Among the top 7mm SSD choices are the Samsung 840 Pro and Corsair Neutron GTX; I think most of Intel's recent SSDs (520+) are 7mm, although you should verify that on your own.
