Nintendo makes its 'Pitch' for Wii U in new commercial

24

Sure there are two new consoles launching this year. But Nintendo isn't going to sit idly by. The combination of a price cut, New Super Mario Bros U, and a marketing campaign may be just what the company needs to turn its Wii U fortunes around.

A new commercial titled "The Pitch" reminds customers that Wii U is a brand new system, not just a peripheral for Wii. It's an upgrade, Nintendo points out, and will enable togetherness.

Andrew Yoon was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Cute. They need to flood the airwaves with commercials for Super Mario 3d World. Not just this: hype up the game!

Is that why they sold a crap-ton of Wii's and DS's?

Well the DS's were to some extent but the Wiis sat in closets here after the initial gimmick wore off.

I didn't know that your household represents all of America.

The Wii sold 100 million units and Nintendo had profited on each unit since day 1. Forbes reported that Nintendo was initially making $6 in profit per unit. As costs decreased then Nintendo was making even more per Wii. That's a minimum $600 million in profit on just the hardware.

You have to consider success in terms other than just assumed popularity. If you ran a company would you care more about what people think about your product or how much money your product is making?

Wasn't referring to solely my household, not by any means. It was a known fact (NPD reported it several times) that the Wii was the system least played by its owners. Never a good sign. Sure it garnered Nintendo temporary profits (and large ones) so that was great but it led to this bad spiral where they're way behind the hardware (and functionality) curve and releasing in-between the other systems but yet still behind them in overall pizazz and appeal.

I'd say they won a battle but lost the war, frankly. Not that I'd even remotely care if the completely disappeared off the planet but for fans of that company, it's a bummer, I'd imagine.

I play my 3DS and DS games all the time - and I was playing my Wii fairly consistently (swapping back and forth with my PC) until the Wii U came out. Granted I have less time for games now because of kids, but I still play my Wii U whenever I get a chance. And now there are so many great games for the system.

The Wii was perfectly hyped, timed, and priced correctly. It served a clear purpose. Microsoft and Sony laid out their cards and Nintendo came in the following year with a low to mid-end console. Years pass...

The Wii U was confusing, overshadowed, and competing with two consoles that were bruised and blooded veterans throwing their absolute best punches with whispering of something big happening very soon. Nintendo responds with a console of fairly equal caliber that costs the same if not more, and with a naming scheme that makes people wonder if it's an upgrade, not to mention very little software or 3rd party support to back it up.

Nintendo should have waited until November 2014, release the Wii U for $200 and relive another Wii sales life. The Wii U is cool, but poorly executed. Think Dreamcast. I think Nintendo will either have to get very aggressive with price cuts, or I hope, troll Sony and Microsoft and come back into the high-end console market some time in 2018.

What do you mean by high-end though? I think I get it but I also don't think Nintendo has been high-end since the SNES. And I say that as an owner of the n64, GC and Wii. I just think Nintendo has a completely different idea of doing things. They design a console to fit the games they have in mind where Sony/ms design the hardware first and let the games do what they want with it

I think for their next console they need to have games lined up on release. I mean fuck the games everyone wants are first party Nintendo games they control that shit. Every Nintendo system falls on its face until a year or two into release when the new Zelda, Mario, etc comes out. By that time there has already been a price cut or two and I can find the system used, that's money Nintendo loses out on by not having their shit together.

Good idea to get the kids explaining it to the adults, but bad execution. They need to make it clear that it's a new console.

Does a commercial like this appeal to me? No. Does it need to? Also no. Long time nintendo fans, and dedicated gamers, such as myself, get all the info they need online. The kid's game market is a starved one. There is no shame in making "games for kids" there were plenty of excellent kid's games on the nes, snes, gnesis, n64 and ps1. They were succesful because of smart advertising campaigns that attracted children, and well written, cleverly designed content that stuck with them 'til adulthood.

the commercial was horrible and why are they saying we need a upgrade they should be saying omg! Nintendos newest system the Wii U!. and stop showing corny family members' you need to add some hardcore gamers' like friends playing each other and at least show the Wii Menu if I were to see this commercial at home I will still think is the regular Wii you need the commercial to show the Wii u more and stop it with the family commercials its getting old Nintendo that's why everybody thanks it's a kid system you need to show some hardcore gamers playing your Wii U and have them explain that is not a Wii but a Wii u have them playing Zelda Wind Waker HD and messaging each other from the tango bottlesI i bet that commercial would sell lots of wii u!!
