PS4 will eventually support MP3s and music CDs

17

Given PS3's slogan--"It Only Does Everything"--it came as a surprise that PS4's media playback capabilities were so limited. Crucially, the system has no support for MP3 or audio CD playback--even after a hefty day-one update. However, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida promises that the features will be coming eventually.

"The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was there are so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there's no MP3 support or CD support on day one," Yoshida said. "The focus has been more on the game features. Some of the features we wanted but we couldn't get in on day one."

Denying that the plan was a subversive way of getting PS4 owners to subscribe to Music Unlimited (included at launch), Yoshida told Giant Bomb (via Eurogamer) that "we didn't really think about MP3 or CD." Of course, the plan is to get around to it "eventually" with Sony "discussing when we can put these features in."

THAT'S THE LAST STRAW!!! PRE-ORDER CANCELLED!!! Just Kidding. Kudos to Sony for focusing on games first, media second. It is, after all, a gaming machine!

yeah...but really... why is it hard to support 2 old music formats? Not supporting music CDs and DRM free MP3s just pushes people into their streaming / subscription services.

There's a certain amount of time to get things done. Within that timeframe is a priority list of things that must be there. MP3 and CDs are not must be there features (over, say, booting properly or PSN working).

So, no, it's not 'hard,' but it is a task, and a task that is a low priority compared to others.

Agreed. Games must be top priority... that and getting me a ps4. Wife won't let me buy one cus' I have a Wii U.

Uhh...yeah...but the PS4 plays DVDs, and every DVD player out there, even a cheap Chinese knock-off, plays CDs. So you can understand why many people would be puzzled why CD playback was left out. If the PS4 was an all digital system with no disc drive, or only played a proprietary disc format like Wii U, then maybe that would make sense, but then again, no, that would make even less sense ;-)

Hopefully along with that MP3 playback we'll also get DLNA and the ability to stream our own music in addition to Music Unlimited.

They actually said they were quite surprised to find out just how popular that was on the PS3 and didn't expect the backlash they got.

Story doesn't add up. Music Unlimited will be available right from the start. So they were working on the music side of things, just their priority was more toward pimping their service.

Also surprised that you can add CD player capabilities later... thought that was a hardware limitation.

Does that mean they'll have to send all of us early adopters small "MP3" and "CD Audio" logo stickers to put on our PS4s next to the Blu-Ray Disc and DVD symbol? ;-)

I don't give a flying fuck about cd's or mp3's running on my ps4. In a household where the ps4 is the only media box outside of a pc it might matter more (but cd's, really?). There are so many ways to stream audio now it's ridiculous. I don't need my gaming console to do it for me.

"we didn't really think about MP3 or CD."

Either they're lying, or they're incredibly stupid. It's a rather glaring thing to just forget about.

Agreed. There's no way that Sony would not have considered those formats, given their legacy.

I went into Gamestop today to ask which headset will work with PS3 and PS4 (for when I eventually upgrade) and they said uhhh none of them.

      Thanks $ony

My guess is they did want to herd customers toward their music service. There was backlash, and Sony wants to keep its image squeaky-clean in the eyes of gamers and has decided to throw a switch and enable MP3 and CD playback. Most people expected to be able to play MP3s and CDs. If those options really were in Sony's plans, they would have said so from the get-go. No reason not to.

That's more than 12 months old, ancient history, Sony has a picture of you on their wall and they go to sleep at night thinking of ways to do right by you.

Yeah, I meant squeaky-clean in the contest of, "all the gamers love us because they think we stand for freedom, so let's keep that up."

I couldn't care less about audio CD's or MP3's personally.. but I'm not happy with the lack of DLNA support as I use that feature on the PS3 regularly. Of course I'm not getting rid of my PS3 for the foreseeable future so it doesn't matter that much.

PS3 was a great media server, after patches (mkv support, specifically). I'm sure PS4 will get these items in coming patches, shame it doesn't even have a simple UPnP browser/player on release day.
