Diablo 3 on PS4 will support Remote Play

Diablo 3 sure does look great on PS4 and it's going to look great on Vita, too, as lead level designer Matthew Berger has confirmed that the game will support Remote Play.

There's no denying that Diablo III looks gorgeous on PS4, as mentioned in our preview. But will it make its way to Vita via the console's Remote Play function? According to lead level designer Matthew Berger, the answer is yes.

"As long as PS4 supports Remote Play, Reaper of Souls will support it," Berger told Gamespot. The quote comes days after Berger had initially denied plans for Remote Play, stating that the UI wouldn't gel well with Vita's small screen size.

PS4 will receive Diablo III in 2014, with the Ultimate Evil Edition packaging in both the base game and the Reaper of Souls expansion.

But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Well shit. So much for holding off on getting a PS4. Hopefully Vita sales improve and Sony releases an XL version of the Vita with something similar to the form factor of the DS4.

Diablo 3 for PS4 isn't out until next year, so it sounds like you can still hold off on the PS4.

I'm confused. There are a bunch of announcements recently about which games support remote play. I thought remote play was standard for all non-motion or eye toy games? Is remote play standard or an optional treat that a developer has to enable? I'm hoping the former.

It can be supported by just about any title that's not using the PlayStation Camera or motion controls. But the developer can still go the other way if they run into development kinks. Diablo 3 was originally going to be one of the exceptions and wasn't going to support Remote Play because of development issues, but now they've gone back on that statement and will support it.

Ah that clears it up. Are there any launch titles (3rd party or whatever) that don't support it? I'm sorry if shack has already addressed this question.

hmm didn't realize this was a per-title compatibility thing.

The controls will usually need some reworking for the Vita, and that's not something where you can just design one standard solution for all games to use.

Yeah I had a feeling that this was true. Between this and Hearthstone on iPad, it sounds like Blizzard is figuring out how to take over my life again.

Wait, I thought they denied it working with Remote Play? Weird.

Awesome if it does indeed work, though!

At a guess, after Blizzard said "Nope, no remote play" Sony probably had some of their developers contact them and show them some tricks to get it working. According to one dev (I think it was the NFS:Rivals team) it only took them 2 days to get Remote Play working, so it doesn't sound like its going to be a major hurtle for most games.

I hope its a simple process because I will determine my purchase of games based on their ability to remote play. Remote play (if it works as advertised) is probably the single biggest thing I'm excited about for the PS4 launch.

Yes remote play is the ability to play your PS4 games (digital or the disc currently in your system) through your wifi to your Vita. The idea (if it works) is that you can pause a PS4 game at any point and easily start playing it right where you left off on your vita. They have hinted that you could technically play it anywhere there is a wifi connection, but Sony is only really suggesting you play it within wifi range of your home router. So its basically the Wii U ability with a wider range.

Is it me or was there no coverage about the PC version of this game at Blizzcon? All the news makes Reaper of Souls sound like a PS4 exclusive with a possible lousy PC port in the future...

Vitas were on sale yesterday for $160 at Radio Shack (online only), and looks like they still have them if anyone is interested. There'll probably be better deals later this month, but it's still good.
