Disney Infinity starter set hits 1 million sold

Disney Infinity's starter set has sold more than 1 million units, a figure that helped move the Disney Interactive division's sales into profitable territory for the quarter.

Disney Infinity has sold more than one million of its starter sets since its August launch, and the individual toy sets are said to be selling very well. When it comes to particularly popular figures, Disney boasts they tend to sell out in only a few days.

"All indications suggest the strong demand for Disney Infinity will continue," Disney CEO Bob Iger said in an earnings conference call yesterday (via GameSpot). The success of Disney Infinity helped the Disney Interactive gaming division hit a profit in the fourth quarter. It made an income of $16 million for the period, up from a loss of $76 million last quarter. Interactive also saw improvement for the full year, up 26% to $1.1 billion, thanks to its console and mobile games.

Disney Infinity's starter set costs $75 and comes with three figures: Mr. Incredible, Sully, and Jack Sparrow. Like Skylanders, though, it offers a large array of extra toys and playsets, based on other Disney properties like Cars, The Lone Ranger, and most recently, Nightmare Before Christmas.

Interesting. I haven't heard hide nor hair about it aside from "It's out!", unlike with Skylanders. Xmas will bring critical mass, I guess.

Their fourth quarter ended September 28 (?!), and Disney Infinity released in August. So in the prior quarter (ending June 29), what titles did Disney Interactive release? All that I really recall from the DIsney Interactive scope is announcing Fantasia: Music Evolved, closing down Junction Point, and closing down LucasArts (which was owned by Disney after acquiring Lucasfilm, but not necessarily financially connected to Disney Interactive).

My wife bought the starter set for me and my kid for my birthday. It's an absolute blast! I really didn't expect it to be as joyous as it is, but i guess it helps being a Disney nerd. Seriously, though, every time I load it up, collect a new in-game "toy" for my toybox, build new stuff in my world... I'm just giddy. The playsets are actually a ton of fun too.. i can't stop playing the Pirates one! I haven't purchased any of the new figures or playsets yet and the "power packs" seem like paying $5 for a cheat code so I will avoid those, but it's just been a ton of fun. One might even say magical! My kid isn't even 3 yet, so he just wants to play with the toys and watch me jump around as "Mr. Mercredible".

It sucks that everywhere I look, it's Skylanders, Skylanders, Skylanders so I'm glad to see Infinity is profiting. Really hope it sticks around long enough for the inevitable Star Wars playsets to come out. The Skylanders figures look dumb as hell to me while the Infinity toys actually look damn cool on my shelf.

Nothing like having a kid so a grown man doesn't have to feel weird about buying toys.

Without reading the report, this is historic as it would be the first quarter Disney Interactive has ever seen a profit in its 15-20 year existence.

Yeah, but at what cost? I think Avalanche and Wideload are the only game studio that Disney owns now (Wikipedia also lists "Gamestar" in China), and most of what they're making are Disney movie/TV release tie-ins and/or mobile games.

It's always been kept afloat by the other divisions, Interactive encompasses not just games but also web, other interactive forms and while it has lots of revenue it has always been in the red. A lot of the big studios have been consolidated down to products that are known. Their mobile game division (primarily the former Tapulous) makes tons of money. The web is actually a good chunk of the revenue too, in fact it has been said by a point of contention for awhile to split out the web from the games side of the interactive division, but then interactive would be even farther in the red.

That said, ESPN rules them all.

He probably hates addictive gameplay mechanics preying on young minds, making them demand that their parents buy them more figurines to be able to play more characters. My nephew's into Skylanders, and he already has a collection running. He's into that and Angry Birds.

My kid did not give a SHIT about this game. Now I have like 300 bucks worth of crap sitting here. Anyone want almost a full set of Disney Infinity stuff for like 100 bucks plus shipping?
