Double Dragon Trilogy heading to mobile devices

Double Dragon Trilogy is coming to iOS and Android devices later this year, packing the three arcade classics together with customizable controls, new difficulty levels, and a remastered soundtrack.

The Double Dragon series was a trailblazer for the beat-em-up genre, as well as the game that shocked our young eyes by having the badguy straight-up punch the damsel in the gut. Now more than 25 years later, it's heading where all retro games seem to eventually end up: mobile devices. Retro port house DotEmu has announced that Double Dragon Trilogy will hit iOS and Android devices near the end of this year.

It compiles the original Double Dragon, Double Dragon 2: The Revenge, and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. You might be more familiar with the subtitle "The Sacred Stones" for the third one, as that was the name used for the North American version.

The Trilogy will include an Arcade and Story mode, for aiming for a high score or just unlocking new stages and achievements, respectively. You can customize your controls, and it features three difficulty levels: mobile, original, and expert. The "mobile" challenge is said to be balanced for mobile devices, which probably makes it a good bit easier. It also includes both the 8-bit soundtrack and a remastered one, and controller support. Obviously, it wouldn't be Double Dragon without co-op, so it includes that mode via Bluetooth.

Lets hope they clean these up ALOT, because DD1 and 2 especially were buggy, wretched games (technically speaking, they were fantastic games) even in the original arcade. There is a reason most peoples fond memories come from the NES ports, which were completely reworked games.

The arcade versions were rough (just played through 'em via Mame + a joystick). The second was way better than the first at least. The first was a quarter grabber!

I actually prefer the nintendo versions of these games to the arcade versions. The controls are much tighter. Also, do any of the difficulty modes limit your lives? The biggest problem with arcade remakes is typically the lack of challenge because the "add coins" option is always available.

I'm a bit dissapointed it's not DD2 NES, because I've played (and occasionally still do) that game so much.

I got it for my birthday one year, and it was so awesome. Later on, I learned about a cheat where you could use turbo and hold down both jump and attack so you could do this mega knee kick move that would destroy anything.

I also had DD1 & DD2 for DOS (those versions were pretty bad).

I got all the special moves down.
Also first boss? Lure to the edge to the left, turbo knee him off the building for an insta kill

The hyper knee isn't a cheat. You just have to press B + A while you are getting up from either a jump or knock down. Alternatively if you simply press either B or A while you are getting up you will do a hyper uppercut. Yes I'm a huge geek on this game and I still play it on my old NES a few times per year.

0h, yeah, but it was still hard getting the timing. With turbo, you can do those all day long.

Yeah the timing is super tricky, even to this day I can't get a hyper knee on every try.
