PlayStation fans were upset to find out that Titanfall would never grace a PlayStation platform. The upcoming shooter from Respawn Entertainment has attracted quite a following ever since E3, but it will remain exclusive to PC and Xbox platforms, EA announced yesterday. Of course, that doesn't mean future games won't end up going multiplatform.

Asked on Twitter about the studio's PS4 plans, studio founder Vince Zampella responded: "Of course we will, just not the first Titanfall," adding that he only found out about the exclusivity deal recently.

Zampella is careful to note that there are currently no plans beyond the first game, adding "we are just focused on making Titanfall as good as we can."

If Titanfall does end up becoming a more-than-one-game franchise, it wouldn't be the first time an EA-owned Xbox exclusive ended up going multiplatform. Mass Effect debuted on Xbox, while its sequels showed up across multiple consoles.

I just want it to be on Steam and only Steam. Go ahead and "bifurcate the community" by having a PC Origin SKU, and a PC Steamworks SKU. It's probably too late now, since Respawn already made up their minds and didn't announce it yet.

At least it's EA Partners, so they can walk with their IP for the sequel to another publisher, or go 100% publisherless via PSN and XBLA.

I wonder if/when we'll see major, AAA titles come out on PSN/XBLA (or whatever it is now) and not retail, solely because of something like this (no publisher for a retail copy, that is).

At that point, most of what they really need is platform testing and QA. Publishers can do that... but is EA really the one you go to if all you need is QA?

Seems pretty dumb to me for these software companies to make exclusive deals only with one system. They are just cutting off half the market out there for potential profits all for the sake of being exclusive. I preordered my ps4 and am not about to switch platforms, nor fork over another $500 for another system with other games offered for both. Not worth it as a consumer and definately not worth it for ONE game they claim to be good. I'll pass on Titan fall. I'll just play other shooters available to me.

Here's the flip side of that coin.

Devs don't necessarily want to learn two different code structures just to make one game compatible with both. I'm sure that the Dev Kits for each system are VASTLY different. It's possible that Titanfall was originally going to be a PC only game, but since microsoft does the xbox, I'm sure porting it over to the other system was supremely easy compared to porting for an entirely different system.

They may be cutting off the market in your perspective, but in theirs they could have just doubled it by going Xbone and PC... as compared to just ONE of those systems.

In this case the dev wanted to make a ps4 version (work had started), but the publisher stopped it. EA decided it was better to have tit fall 1 as an xb1/win exclusive, perhaps because MS offered to pay for a lot of marketing.

Paying for marketing is NOT a small amount of money. You're probably right.

That was my point from the start. MS and Sony wants to lock in on a possible game that would sway consumers to buy their consoles as a marketing tactic. What I am saying is MS and Sony should just focus on putting out a killer system that people would want to buy standing on its own merits.
This would open the market for software companies to reach out to a larger consumer basis and increase their revenue. Their game would speak for itself and not some handout from MS or Sony. This way the consumer wins as well having multiple choices and extra cash on hand to purchase other games or offerings for their system. If you limit the market and dry out the consumer by having them purchase both systems, most likely they will not buy more games.
All in all what I am saying is exclusive title deals benefits no one in the long run. Everyone loses.

One last point... look at GTA5. Would they have been able to achieve what they did no matter how great of a marketing ran to the public but kept it exclusive.? Would Call of duty or Battlefield be where they are by making games only for one system? My point is because they have the consumer and general public in mind when developing their games, they are able to produce great games that are available for all consumers. If they only stuck with one console, I dont care how much you entice the consumer to purchase your game, people will not fork over another half a grand for another system just to play one game that is exclusive, no matter how much they like the game.
It all comes down to marketing tactics and exclusive titles limit more that expand.

Most likely, enough money changed hands to make the decision feel much less dumb.

MS/Sony most likely reduce their cut per sale, offer extended advertising, etc to make up for it Also like vertdang says, Dev's are resources limited so they will jump at deals like this.

Sony does this a lot with the Playstation, so many PS3 games etc I wish I could play but don't own a PS3.

I have a feeling this approach might boost PC sales more than Xbox One. People didn't pre-order a PS4 because Titanfall might come to it eventually. I think most people who are interested in Titanfall and plan on getting a PS4 just said they will probably pllay it on PC.

I would have loved to see Titanfall on my future PS4, but I'll probably be even happier playing it on my PC.

Mass Effect was an odd case because the first game was developed by Bioware when they were independent and published by Microsoft. EA bought Bioware and the Mass Effect franchise along with it.
Microsoft still had publishing rights for the first game which is why we didn't see the first Mass Effect on PS3 until after the trilogy was complete when Microsoft likely figured the damaged had already been done.
