Ground Zeroes will help ease players into Metal Gear Solid 5, Kojima explains

Metal Gear Solid 5 will have its groundwork laid by Ground Zeroes, and series creator Hideo Kojima has explained the gameplay and story details that make the prologue so important.

The relationship between Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain have many players confused. What is the role of this extended prologue?

"If we just threw you into the main open-world game, we figured that veteran MGS fans would get confused," series creator Hideo Kojima explained.

As an example, he cited Snake being fatigued after a mission, and needing a short break. He said Ground Zeroes will have some of those dynamic elements, but will keep others fixed so that players can get into a few basic concepts before jumping into the full game. "So to keep people from thinking 'This isn't MGS!', we'll limit the amount available to you at first and set a static time and weather pattern. So you'll get to play this open-world, highly free MGS in those conditions," Kojima told Japanese magazine Famitsu (via Polygon).

Once again, Kojima reiterated how the two games relate to each other in terms of story. "GZ takes place in 1975, a year after Peace Walker, and the main game takes place in 1984, nine years later," he said. "Something bad happens at the end of GZ, and then you continue into the main game. Unless you play GZ, you won't understand why retaliation is one of MGS5's main themes. It really is the 'ground zero' of Snake's story."

yup. this all makes me feel better. its now obvious to me that Hayter couldnt have been chosen as the VA. i see why someone else was chosen, it wasnt just for marketing. hayter worked in MGS3 because, well, that was ages ago and we werent quiet at the level of realism with these games (presentation wise) and part of the marketing and storytelling of that game was the somewhat uncertain truth as to the protagonist's identity. now though, they can make the appearance and characterization different from solid, as is obvious. he looks like snake, looks enough like him that he could never be mistaken for being anything but closely related, but this character, THIS big boss looks like his own man, and not a literal clone of solid/liquid(well, you know what i mean). i like this.

Yeah, you make a very valid point. I've been bummed about lack of hayter since I heard about it -- but to differentiate these characters so clearly now makes total sense. I'm incredibly excited to see how kojima and company are going to close tie the ends up leading into MG ... this also leads me to hope that they create some MG/2 re-make -- that could work from both sides or something.. I don't know -- I just want more of Big Boss's story during MG games.
