Arkane Studios, the developer of last year's Dishonored, is switching to CryEngine for its next project. The studio's as-yet unannounced game will use Crytek's engine, instead of Bethesda's own idTech 5 Engine or continuing to use Unreal Engine 3 as they did for Dishonored.

ZeniMax human resources manager Ashley Pierce said in job listings (via IGN) that the studio is working in CryEngine. Bethesda's BattleCry Studios is also using CryEngine for an announced project, according to listings.

We don't know many details about Arkane's next project yet. Co-creative director Raphael Colantonio said that it would feel similar to Dishonored, thanks to branching paths and dynamic choices. He also said that the studio's approach to next-gen will involve more density, to provide more characters, unique animations, and larger areas at any given time.

Cool. CryTek's engines have always been really, really impressive, and UnrealEngine could use some competition.

I've also heard CryEngine's tools are really good as well, though I haven't used them myself.

Heh, remember when it was announced that Id Tech 5 was "going to be used within ZeniMax"? http://www.shacknews.com/article/65113/rage-engine-id-tech-5

Yeah, that announcement was back in mid-2010, when Rage was still in its bubble of development, when Todd Hollenshead was still CEO of Id, before we had any idea of the downsides of megatextures and gunning for 60 FPS under all circumstances, etc., etc., etc. There's ONE mod on ModDB for Rage: http://www.moddb.com/games/rage/mods

...and ZeniMax's current mandate to Id is "just do Doom 4." http://www.shacknews.com/article/78549/doom-4-was-not-exciting-enough-sent-back-to-the

It's a sad commentary on the state of Id Tech 5. It's a good engine, with a bunch of features duct-taped to it that made sense under the context of developing for the XBox 360, under the premise that megatexturing would deliver on the effort put into it, but now it feels like looking at the debris of a trainwreck from a year ago.

And this is during a time when FPS games are getting incredibly by-the-numbers boring, where all we have now are Battlefield and Call of Duty annualizing (for EA, it's to the point where it's Battlefield 4 this year, and Star Wars: BattlefieldFront next year, and probably rotating between DICE and EA DICE LA every other year). Those games have no soul; they're just cash cows at this point. I'm looking for something a little deeper than the Rise of the Triad and Shadow Warrior remakes; a game that doesn't fall into the "Michael Bay rollercoaster" trap of ultra-linear railshooter pathing and Quick-Time Events prioritized over FPS combat.

I'm having more fun playing Doom 1/2 and Quake 1/2/3 at this point; that's sad.

It's Dishonored 2. They just don't want to make it official until the game is further along.

It's Prey 2. Arkane Austin are working on Prey 2, while Lyon are working on Dishonored 2. Crytek seems like a weird choice. If you're going to license an engine, why not stay with Epic for Unreal 4? At least then you have people on the team who understand its foundation already. I doubt we'll be seeing id tech 6.
