When you think of Star Wars, it's easy to think of climactic battles between Jedi and Sith. But it's easy to forget that starship battles are just as big a hallmark of the series as lightsaber duels. BioWare is ready to focus on PvP space battles with the next Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion, Galactic Starfighter, which is set for a February 4 release.

The Galactic Starfighter expansion will introduce 12v12 PvP space battles at no extra charge. Players will get a wide array of customization options to design their fighter however they please. They can also upgrade their ship's weapons and abilities as they play. The expansion will also feature a number of PvP game modes, which have not yet been specified.

Active subscribers will receive early access to the Galactic Starfighter expansion on December 3, along with a slew of bonuses. If you're not a subscriber yet, you can grab a 30-day subcription for $14.99 before November 1 to receive an early gunship unlock and custom paint job. Players with Preferred Status (anyone who makes an online store purchase) will get access to the expansion on January 14.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Yup, and ironically, it's probably the most interesting thing I've seen in TOR. If they'd had this at launch, I might've stuck around longer than the free month.

Then again, I've no doubt the actual implementation will be as underwhelming as the rest, and it'll only be better in my mind.

Wasn't there a "this looks like a bad flash game" spacefighter mode in TOR?

Yeah, there was a crappy on rails timed shooter thing, but it really was quite terrible

No! I just restarted playing TOR last week after dropping it from it's flawed and lonely launch. It's a great MMO, lot's of different elements and this is going to make it really rad!
        I hope it's cool!

I wonder how the content will break down across their 3 tiers of players
