Update: Story updated to reflect clarification from Andrew Spinks.

A sequel to Terraria is in the planning stages, according to creator Andrew Spinks. Having temporarily stopped work on the original to pursue an unnamed project, he has now confirmed that the mystery game is Terraria 2.

He came back to work on the recently-released 1.2 update, but has been thinking through the sequel as well. He said he planned to be halfway through development of Terraria 2 at this point, but coming back to make the update delayed his progress. His intent for the sequel is to overcome some of the limitations of the original.

"I'm super excited about starting Terraria 2," Spinks told Rock Paper Shotgun. "It's a ways out, but it's gonna have a lot in common with the original. It's gonna be quite different as well. I really want to expand on the whole Terraria universe."

He said the loot and progression systems are locked-in with Terraria, which sacrifices some flexibility, which he intends to change. "In Terraria 2, I really want to have infinite worlds so you're not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too. There's a lot of stuff [I want to add and change]."

Spinks also said that Terraria updates will continue. The 1.2 update didn't include a endgame boss, so he wants to add that in the next month or two. He also has ideas for a Halloween update, and maybe some others that are a few months out. To help with the workload, he's considering hiring a small team to work on updates while he moves onto Terraria 2.

"In Terraria 2, I really want to have infinite worlds. You can travel anywhere." So he wants to make Starbound?

I think there is room for both. Starbound is of course sci-fi heavy and if Terraria 2 sticks to fantasy/magic then there is no reason they both cant coexist.

Of course Terraria is prolly 2 years away from now so who knows what will happen.

I had to go look at this Starbound and it seems fun but nowhere did I see that you can dig/destroy ground and basically tunnel like you can in Terraria which does set them apart. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I know that exploration is the focus of Terraria, but I'd love it if they expanded town building. Something as inconsequential as useless citizens taking residence in your spare houses would be appreciated.

Yeah, an incentive to build more housing would be good.

Normally I'd be excited but I'm looking forward to Starbound now.... whenever it comes out hehe.. Terraria 2 would probably still be years away.

Just spent my lunch hour playing Terraria again, starting from scratch this week, with 2 of my colleagues. As soon as I got out of the game I had the ShackNews page up and refreshed and saw this story. Perfect. Freaking. Timing.

I just hope I can have it fill my rather large monitor and not be all super tiny.
